Texans drop two in Arlington to open final weekend of conference play

ARLINGTON, Texas – Tarleton State Baseball struggled offensively in the first pair of games against the Mavericks to fall 0-2 on the weekend.
 
Tarleton State (26-28, 16-12 WAC) dropped both games in Friday's doubleheader at UT Arlington (21-32, 15-13 WAC) with a 6-2 final in Game 1 and a 9-5 final in the second game. 
 
Game 1:
 
Piercen McElyea (L, 3-1) went 2.2 innings on the bump to start things off for Tarleton State, giving up three runs on four hits, three walks and three strikeouts. 
 
Caylon Dygert (W, 6-3) went 6.0 innings as the starter for the Mavericks, giving up no runs on two hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Nicholas Robb (S, 4) saw 3.0 innings on the bump, giving up a couple of runs on four hits, two walks and one strikeout. 
 
The Texans compiled two runs on six hits with a homer from Hunter Smith for his first in the Purple and White and a triple from Mason Hammonds to lead the offense. Smith secured the lone stole base for the visitors. The Texans left seven runners on throughout the duration of the game. 
 
UTA amassed six runs on nine hits with one double and a pair of stolen bases, with a total of seven runners left stranded. 
 
The Mavericks were first to the board with a lone run in the bottom of the second inning. With one out recorded, the two-hole walked and the second out followed, allowing the lead runner to advance. An RBI double tallied the first run of the game.
 
In the bottom of the third, a pair of singles added a couple of runners to the base paths with no outs and a walk to load the bases for UTA. A couple of outs followed, allowing one run to come across. An RBI single tallied the third run for the home team as the final out of the inning followed, leaving two runners aboard. 
 
Another trio of runs came in for UTA in the bottom of the fifth. The inning's leadoff singled and a double play followed to put away two for the Texans. A hit by pitch kept the inning alive for the Mavericks and a pair of singles followed to bring in the fourth run. A wild pitch advanced the couple of runners on base and a walk followed to load the diamond. A two RBI single brought the total to six for the home team. 
 
In the top of the eighth, Hammonds tripled to start off the inning. A groundout from Trace Morrison made room for Hammonds to come home to get the Texans on the board. 
 
Another run in the top of the ninth for Tarleton State chipped away at the Maverick's lead but ultimately wasn't enough to keep the Texans alive. In the top of the inning, a leadoff homer for Smith marked his first as a Texan. Game 1 ended with a 6-2 final in favor of the home team. 
 
Game 2:
 
Matt Haley (L, 2-9) got the start for the Texans securing two outs, giving up six runs on seven hits, one walk and no strikeouts. 
 
Zach Norris got the start for UTA with 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on four hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Jacob Hasty (W, 3-1) went 2.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits, one walk and one strikeout. Joe Steeber (S, 4) saw 2.0 innings on the bump, giving up no runs on three hits, no walks and one strikeout. 
 
Tarleton State totaled five runs on 11 hits, with a home run from Cris Enriquez and a couple of doubles with assistance from Hammonds and Cole Miears. Hammonds stole the lone base for the Purple and White. 11 runners were left on for the Texans.
 
The Mavericks finished with nine runs on 12 hits with a home run and six doubles. Five runners were left on for UTA. 
 
The Purple and White were first to draw blood with a couple of runs in the opening inning. Hammonds singled to right as the leadoff and advanced on a balk with one out recorded. With two outs on the board, Enriquez left the yard to put a pair of runs on to give the Texans the lead. 
 
In the bottom of the first, the leadoff singled and a walk followed. Two singles followed to bring in the first run. Another RBI single added the second run. A double to left field and a single to the right side brought in another pair of runs. A wild pitch advanced a runner and a groundout brought in the fifth run. A double to right tallied the sixth and the final out followed to close out the inning. 
 
 
Sergio Guerra led off the inning with a single and Hammonds doubles to put the pair in scoring position while Morrison walked to load the bases. A sacrifice fly scored Guerra to bring the total to three for Tarleton State. 
 
A leadoff homer from the Mavericks tallied the lone run in the third for the home team. 
 
Miears doubled as the leadoff in the top of the fifth and advanced on a wild pitch. A pair of outs followed and Smith singled to score Miears for the fourth run.
 
 
In the top of the seventh with one out, Austin Russell walked and advanced on a wild pitch. Smith singled to bring Russell in for the fifth run. 
 
In the bottom of the seventh, the leadoff for UTA doubled and with an out recorded, another double brought in the eighth run. 
 
The bottom of the eighth welcomed another run for the Mavericks. With one out recorded, the two-hole walked. A sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch advanced the runner and a double brought in the final run of the game for a 9-5 final for the home team. 
 
The series finale will take place on Saturday at 1 p.m.
