Tarleton State Track and Field opens 2025 calendar year at Corky Classic on Friday

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Track and Field will compete in its first indoor meet of the 2025 calendar year on Friday and Saturday at the Corky Classic hosted by Texas Tech at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

Head coach Bobby Carter is in his first season at the helm of the Texan program. Coach Carter previously served as an assistant coach for the University of Arizona. Carter was an elite athlete himself, starring in jump at Nebraska. During his time competing from 2009-14 he earned a pair of All-American honors.
 
In its first week of the season on December 5-7, the Texans set seven school records. Freshman Malak Rashwan stole the show setting the new school record in her collegiate debut. Rashwan finished third with 3495 points. The Egypt native, also set a new program record in the 60-meter hurdles as part of the pentathlon. She finished second in the event in 8.71 seconds.
 
In the 5000, both the men's and women's records were broken. Angel Gomez set the new school record on the men's side breaking his own record by 13 seconds and winning the event in 14:35.41. Kaitlyn Gale set the new women's record in her first indoor meet as a Texan in 17:25.31.
 
Taylor McFarland shattered the school record in the 600-yard run by over four seconds. McFarland finished second in the event in 1:24.40.
 
On the field side, junior Tayler Wessely broke the school record on her first throw in the women's weight throw. Her first throw of 16.98 meters was her best and it earned her a sixth-place overall finish. Sir Jonathan Sims set the new men's long jump program record with a best jump of 7.65 meters.
 
In addition, 16 individuals posted 17 total program top 10 performances during the first weekend.
 
The Texans return to the Corky Classic for the first time since 2023. Last season, the Texans only competed at Texas Tech's second indoor event, the Stan Scott Invitational. Current Texan pole vaulter Sage Barmettler broke the school record at the time with a best vault of 3.53 meters.
 
Tarleton State will have a week off before returning to Lubbock at the end of the month. The Texans will participate in the Stan Scott Invite and Multis on January 30-31 at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center. It will mark the final time the squad travels to Lubbock during indoor season, but the crew will head to Red Raider country for their final meet of the outdoor regular season.
