GCU pulls away late to defeat Tarleton State Women’s Basketball

STEPHENVILLE, Texas  – Tarleton State Women's Basketball entered the fourth quarter with the lead and looked to end Grand Canyon's winning streak at 14 games, but the Lopes finished on a 14-6 scoring run and defeated the Texans 57-53 on Saturday night at Wisdom Gym.

GCU finished the second half shooting 55% from the floor and forced Tarleton State to miss 11 of their final 12 shots.

Senior guard Arieona Rosborough posted her second double-double of the season, leading the Texans with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guards Miannah Little and Jakoriah Long both added scoring depth for the Texans on Saturday, with Little coming up 11 points and Long scoring 10 points.

Feeding off the energy from the fans at Wisdom Gym from the jump, Tarleton State erupted out in front. After taking an early 3-0 lead on the opening possessions, sophomore center Faith Acker stuffed Grand Canyon's shot for her 52nd career block. She is now in the top 15 in program history for career blocks.

Acker turned defense into offense by converting a basket inside, with layups by Little and Long extending the Texans' lead. GCU was forced into 26.7% shooting in the first 10 minutes, allowing Tarleton State to take a two-point lead after the opening period.

The Lopes responded with attacking offense, but the Texans countered with baskets of their own. Trading baskets with seven minutes to play in the first half, Rosborough raced to the basket following a GCU layup and scored to put the Texans ahead 20-16.

GCU pulled within one point after a layup with two and a half minutes to go, but the Texans responded by ending the second quarter with six unanswered points. Rosborough hit three free throws in the closing minutes of the second quarter, with Long drilling a 3-pointer with 29 seconds to go that put the Texans ahead 27-20 at halftime.

Tarleton State came out of the locker room continuing the momentum, building its lead off baskets from Acker and senior forward Andjela Bigović. GCU climbed back and cut it within one point with 44 seconds to go in the period, but once again the Texans countered the Lopes' offensive punch. Rosborough found Long for another 3-pointer with 23 seconds to go and forced GCU into a turnover on its last possession to take a 47-43 lead.

GCU made a basket and a pair of free throws to tie the game at 47 before a jumper by senior forward Elise Turrubiates put the Texans back on top. After the Lopes tied it up again, GCU guard/forward Tiarra Brown went up and under the basket to draw the foul while converting the layup. Brown missed the free throw, but the Texans turned the ball over and GCU hit another layup to make it a two-possession lead.

Following a made free throw, Tarleton State forced GCU into a turnover and converted a pair from the charity strike after a technical foul on the Lopes. The Texans looked to take the lead, but GCU blocked the shot and sank two free throws to make it a 3-point game with 29 seconds to play.

After missing the tying 3-point attempt, Tarleton State was fouled and sank a free throw to make it a two-point game. GCU, however, sank two free throws to make it a two-possession game and left Wisdom Gym extending their winning streak to 15 games.

Tarleton State returns to Wisdom Gym on Thursday at 7 p.m. to face in-state rival Abilene Christian.
