Tarleton State Tennis sweeps Saturday home doubleheader

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Tennis collected a pair of victories in its Saturday home doubleheader, defeating Lubbock Christian 6-1 and Collin College 7-0 for the sweep at the Tarleton Tennis Facility.

The Texans won 11 of its 12 singles matches on Saturday and went undefeated in doubles. Tarleton State moved its record to 3-0 on the season, the second consecutive season the Texans won their first three matches of the year.

Freshmen Maria Castano and Duru Kuscu stayed undefeated in singles by each collecting a pair of singles wins on Saturday. Castano and Kuscu capped off the day by winning their final singles matches without losing a game. Having a perfect 3-0 record this week, Castano and Kuscu are the first Tarleton State freshmen in the Division I Era to have three wins in their first three matches.

"Our team had another great day," head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron said. "We came out focused and ready to go. I thought everyone stepped up in doubles, playing with intent and good energy. We had a lot of highlights this weekend, but our freshmen were elite. Duru and Maria embraced the weekend, they were ready to go and really helped us get through the finish line. I am proud of this team and look forward to keep working and competing again next weekend."

Match 1 vs. Lubbock Christian
Kuscu and junior Ximena Morales helped the Texans get off to a strong start, not losing a game in their doubles match to collect a 6-0 win. Tarleton State clinched the doubles point thanks to a 6-2 win on Court 1 from senior Maretha Burger and junior Emma Persson

Persson, the 2023 WAC Player of the Year, continued her strong performance in singles moments later. The junior from Sweden picked up her first singles win of the year by collecting a 6-2, 6-1 victory on Court 1.

As it had in Thursday's match against New Mexico State, the light of Tarleton State's freshmen duo continued to shine. Kuscu won her singles match on Court 2 7-5, 6-4 while Castano came up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on Court 4.

It wasn't just the Texan freshmen in the spotlight, however. Tarleton State juniors Adeliya Mukhutdinova and Morales also picked up their first singles wins of the season in their matches against Lubbock Christian. Mukhutdinova did not lose a single game in her 6-0, 6-0 win on Court 6. Morales did not lose a game in the first set and carried momentum into a straight sets win 6-0, 6-4 on Court 3.

Match 2 vs. Collin College
Burger/Persson got the Texans rolling with a 6-2 doubles win on Court 1 for their third win of the week. Castano and junior Clara Sobius sealed the doubles point for the Texans with a 6-2 win on Court 3.

Tarleton State had six sets where the Texans did not lose a single game, starting with Kuscu and Castano with matching 6-0, 6-0 wins. Castano and Kuscu became the first Tarleton State duo to have 6-0, 6-0 results in the same match since Burger and Martha Makintasi on March 1, 2024 (vs. Prairie View A&M).

Mukhutdinova continued to dominate in the second match of the day, only dropping one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 win on Court 6. The rest of Tarleton State's junior class came through victorious, with Persson starting the win train. She collected her second victory of the day 6-1, 6-1 on Court 1 while Morales won 6-2, 6-1 on Court 3. Sobius won the final six games to clinch a 6-2, 6-0 win on Court 5.
