Tarleton Women’s Basketball moves back in win column with victory over Southern Utah

STEPHENVILLE, Texas  – Tarleton Women's Basketball got back to its winning ways, defeating Southern Utah 64-53 on Thursday night at Wisdom Gym for its first WAC win of the season.

The Texans, who are 7-1 at Wisdom Gym this year, picked up their 10th overall on Thursday night.

After scoring a season-high 28 points at UT Arlington, senior guard Arieona Rosborough had her second straight 20-point outing with a game-high 20 points on Thursday. Rosborough is the first Tarleton player to have back-to-back 20 point games in the Texans' first two conference contests in the Division I Era.

Senior forward Elise Turrubiates led the Texans on the glass, matching a career-high 11 rebounds. Turrubiates also scored six points coming off the bench.

"I thought we defended well," head coach Bill Brock said. "I wanted to see us finish this game right. If you are going to get to the next level in any program, you have to have a mentality to finish strong. But, you're never going to be unhappy with a conference win."

Southern Utah took the early lead in the first quarter, converting a fastbreak following a 3-pointer to move ahead by one point. Tarleton responded at the charity strike, knocking down three straight free throws to swing the advantage. Turrubiates gave an early spark off the bench to help the Texans stay out in front, assisting on an Alani Fluker hook shot and scoring the final first quarter bucket that allowed Tarleton to have a 17-10 cushion.

Four free throws and a 3-pointer from junior guard Karyn Sanford allowed the Texans to take a 12-point lead early in the second quarter. After Southern Utah knocked down four consecutive free throws to make it a single-digit game, layups from Rosborough and senior guard Jakoriah Long allowed the Texans to go back up by 12 points. Tarleton forced the Thunderbirds into just 28.5% shooting in the first half that allowed the Texans to go into the locker room with a 34-23 advantage.

Rosborough opened the third quarter scoring with a basket while drawing the foul on Tarleton's second offensive possession of the half. After a 3-pointer by senior guard Miannah Little and a layup from Long, senior guard Niki Van Wyk fed sophomore center Faith Acker inside on back-to-back possessions for points. Turrubiates helped the Texans stay in front with a jumper and the Texans went into the final period ahead by 19 points.

Van Wyk helped Tarleton's offense pick up right where it left off, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to begin the fourth quarter. Southern Utah, however, eyed a comeback and went on a 13-0 scoring run to cut the deficit to nine points. The lead was too much for the Thunderbirds to overcome and Tarleton grabbed the 11-point win at Wisdom Gym.

Tarleton will host Utah Tech at Wisdom Gym on Saturday at 2 p.m. in its next WAC contest.
