Second half run allows Texas A&M to defeat Tarleton State Women’s Basketball

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Tarleton State Women's Basketball gave Texas A&M all they could handle at Reed Arena on Thursday afternoon, but 51.6% second half shooting from the Aggies allowed them to defeat the Texans 79-64.

The Texans controlled the majority of the first half thanks to 7-of-14 shooting from beyond the arc, their best first half shooting performance from 3-point range this season. Texas A&M used 60% third quarter shooting to regain the lead and made 16 of its final 31 shot attempts to close the second half.

Senior guard Gia Adams led all scorers with a season-high 21 points. It was the most points she had in a game since March 7, 2024.

"I'm proud of the way we came out and I'm proud of how well we played in the first half," head coach Bill Brock said. "In the second half we played hard, but Texas A&M's talent took over. I thought we showed some progress as a team in some areas, but we could have done better in some other areas. I thought our kids played really hard and they were in tune. I think we got a little bit better today. The final score was not indicative of how competitive the game was."

The Texans made it clear from the jump that the first meeting between the two schools was going to be a battle. Tarleton State raced to an early 6-0 scoring run and stretched its lead to double digits thanks to a 3-pointer from senior guard/forward Kyriana Jones. Free throws from Texas A&M cut the deficit to single digits, but a 3-pointer from senior guard Jakoriah Long put the Texans back up by 10.

Tarleton State continued to utilize the 3-point line as an offensive weapon, with junior forward Allie Myers knocking down her first 3-pointer of the season to put the Texans up 20-9. The Texans shot 55.6% from beyond the arc in the opening period, allowing Tarleton State to take a seven-point lead through the first 10 minutes.

Junior guard Caroline Lyles helped the Texans pick up right where they left off, snatching a steal that resulted in a layup on the second quarter's first possession. The Texans followed with back-to-back 3-pointers, taking an 11-point lead halfway through the second quarter.

Texas A&M, however, responded with eight unanswered points to trim the deficit to one possession. The Aggies took its first lead of the game after Adams knocked in a layup, but Jones responded with another layup to help the Texans retake the advantage. A layup from Texas A&M with 18 seconds remaining in the first half gave the Aggies a one-point lead into the locker room.

Efficiency allowed the Aggies to stretch its lead in the third quarter, scoring the first three baskets of the second half in two minutes. Tarleton State made it a one-point game thanks to a 3-pointer from Adams and a layup from junior forward Shadasia Brackens. Senior guard Luka Malinka found freshman center Elodie Lutbert for a basket that made it a 50-48 game, but Texas A&M used an 8-0 scoring run to end the third quarter.

Texas A&M held Tarleton State to 27.3% fourth quarter shooting to maintain its lead and come out with its second win of the season.

Tarleton State returns home to the EECU Center on Sunday at 2 p.m. to face McNeese. The Texans will be hosting its annual canned food drive sponsored by St. Luke's. One canned good equals one free general admission ticket.

Season tickets are on sale now and start at just $50. Combination season ticket packages for both Men's and Women's Basketball begin at $125 and are available for purchase by calling the Tarleton State Ticket Office at 254-968-1832.
