Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Grant Cohen

Late run, red-shot fourth quarter shooting lifts Tarleton State Women’s Basketball past Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Ending the game on a 9-0 scoring run, Tarleton State Women's Basketball got back to its winning ways and picked up a 56-45 road win at Texas State Tuesday at Strahan Arena at the University Events Center.

Down by two heading into the final period, the Texans made nine of their final 13 shots while holding the Bobcats scoreless for the final four and a half minutes. This was Tarleton State's first win over Texas State in program history and its first road win of the season.

Senior guard Gia Adams led the Texans' scoring with a game-high 16 points, including nine in the fourth quarter. Junior forward Shadasia Brackens (16 points, 10 rebounds) and freshman center Elodie Lutbert (10 points, 12 rebounds) lifted the Texans by each posting a double-double.

The Texans shooting started scorching, making four of their first six shots. After Lutbert blocked the Bobcats' shot, the Texans capitalized by making a jumper to go with a 3-pointer to take a five point lead. A second chance layup by senior guard Jakoriah Long made it a 7-0 run before Brackens scored six straight points that forced Texas State to call a timeout.

Texas State, however, responded by ending the first quarter with seven unanswered points. The Bobcats' defense forced the Texans into a seven and a half minute scoring drought, allowing Texas State to take a four-point lead with 4:31 left in the first half.

The Texans clawed their way back in front, using a layup from Lutbert and a basket while drawing the foul from Adams to tie the game. A Brackens jumper and shutdown defense for the last two and a half minutes of the half allowed Tarleton State to go out in front at halftime.

Back-to-back baskets from Lutbert allowed the Texans to stay on top to start the third quarter, with a jumper from Adams giving Tarleton State a 28-25 lead. A 3-pointer by senior guard Luka Malinka stretched the lead before the Bobcats scored on three straight possessions to tie the game. The Texans answered with a bucket to regain the advantage, but the Bobcats scored on their final two possessions to take a 37-35 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Texans worked fast and efficient in the game's final period, scoring on each of their first four possessions. Tarleton State regained the advantage and never looked back, with Adams scoring seven straight points during that stretch. Brackens and Lutbert helped keep the Texans ahead with layups before Adams answered the bell again.

Red-hot shooting for the Texans continued in the fourth quarter thanks to senior guard/forward Kyriana Jones knocking in back-to-back baskets. A 3-pointer by Brackens with 1:16 to go capped off the scoring spree and put the game out of reach, allowing the Texans to go back to Stephenville with victory.

Tarleton State wraps up its road trip in December, playing at Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
