Tarleton State Women’s Basketball begins 2025-26 in victory with win over Schreiner in opener

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Women's Basketball expects to "Fill The Tank" in the 2025-26 season and the Texans began fueling Monday night at the EECU Center by defeating Schreiner 90-35 in the regular season opener.

The Texans, who are coming off its first 20-win season in the Division I era last year, never trailed in the opener. Tarleton State's balanced offensive attack resulted in 12 different Texans scoring and 44.6% shooting.

Junior forward Shadasia Brackens shined in her Texan debut, recording a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. She became the first Texan in the Division I era and the first since 2016 to post a double-double in a season opener (Mackenzie Hailey: 17 points, 10 rebounds vs. Missouri S&T).

Brackens (11) and junior forward Allie Myers (10) led the Texans on the glass with double-digit rebounding games, becoming the first Tarleton State duo in the last 20 years to each record 10+ rebounds in a season opener. Sophomore guard Mar'Cyah Willis led the scoring with a game-high 16 points off the bench, her first double-digit game as a Texan.

"Overall, I'm very pleased with our team's effort," head coach Bill Brock said. "I thought everyone that went into the game played hard. Our starters set the tone and we had a really good pace to start the game. We had a lot of scoring contributions tonight. Now, we start preparation for a really tough game against Arkansas State on Friday."

The Texans jumped at the chance to take advantage early and never looked back. After two layups from freshman center Elodie Lutbert, Tarleton State stretched the lead with a 9-0 scoring run.

A 3-pointer by senior guard Jakoriah Long allowed the Texans to take a double-digit advantage, with the scoring spree continuing with a layup from Brackens. Tarleton State shot 47.8% from the floor in the first 10 minutes while holding Schreiner to 23% shooting in the opening period to take a 15-point lead.

Willis' first of four 3-pointers got the second quarter scoring started for the Texans, igniting a 16-4 run to end the first half. Back-to-back layups from senior guard/forward Kyriana Jones along with a 3-pointer by senior guard Luka Malinka pushed the Texans in front by 27 points at halftime.

The Texans continued pouring in the points in the second half, using a 13-0 scoring run in the third quarter to move ahead by 40. Brackens and Willis scored the Texans' final 10 points of the period to make it a 68-26 game.

Willis made it rain from downtown in the game's final period, knocking down three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Holding Schreiner to just 25% shooting in the second half, Tarleton State eased its way to the first win of the season.

Tarleton State will play its second game of its three-game home stretch on Friday at 11 a.m. at the EECU Center against Arkansas State, the Sun Belt Conference champions and a 2025 NCAA Tournament team.
