Tarleton State Women’s Basketball clinches third straight win, defeats TAMU-San Antonio

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Women's Basketball continued its ride in victory lane, extending its winning streak to three games with a 94-73 win over Texas A&M-San Antonio on Sunday afternoon at the EECU Center.

The Texans came down with a season-high 56 rebounds while shooting 50% from the floor to obtain its third straight win. It was the second-most rebounds by a Tarleton State team under head coach Bill Brock

Junior forward Shadasia Brackens registered her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds, making her the first Texan since 2016 to have four double-doubles through Tarleton State's first 10 games. Freshman center Elodie Lutbert recorded her third straight game with a double-double, adding 15 points and 12 rebounds. Brackens and Lutbert are the first Texan duo in the last two decades to record three straight double-doubles in the same three games.

The rest of Tarleton State's starting five made key contributions with double-digit scoring efforts, with senior guard Jakoriah Long adding 12 points while senior guard/forward Kyriana Jones had 11 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Gia Adams had 11 points to go with a season-high seven rebounds and a season-high seven assists.

"Overall, it was a good day for the kids. I'm glad we got to get a lot of players in the game," Brock said. " I was really pleased with our third quarter. We played very well during that period. I'm thankful for the win today."

After the Texans started the game by scoring on their first trips down the floor, the Jaguars responded by trimming the early deficit to take an 8-6 lead. Tarleton State answered early by going on a 12-0 scoring run to increase the lead by double digits. Brackens lifted the Texans in the final three minutes, scoring seven points in the final three minutes to keep Tarleton State out in front.

The Texans took advantage of the offensive glass in the opening period, grabbing six offensive boards to get six second chance points. Tarleton State ended the first period by shooting 59.1% from the floor to take a 14-point lead.

Texas A&M-San Antonio cut the deficit to single digits early in the second quarter, but the Texans used 10 unanswered points to go back up by 17. Layups from freshman guard Kristian Hieskill and Adams kept the Texans out by a comfortable margin. Using points in the paint to its advantage while controlling the glass, Tarleton State went into the locker room with a 13-point lead.

Opening the second half with six straight points, the Texans blazing shooting continued with a 15-0 scoring run that put them up 68-36. 3-pointers from Long and freshman guard Alexis Rynders kept the Texans' momentum before layups from juniors Caroline Lyles and Allie Myers capped off the scoring spree.

The Texans shot 57.9% from the floor in the third quarter, outscoring the Jaguars in the paint 18-2. Tarleton State held Texas A&M-San Antonio to just 18.8% shooting in the third quarter to go up 76-43 entering the final period.

Texas A&M-San Antonio scored 30 points in the fourth quarter in an attempt to trim the deficit. The Texans' lead, however, was too much for the Jaguars to overcome.

Tarleton State takes a 12-day break from games and finishes off non-conference play in the ACU Christmas Classic starting Friday, December 19 in Abilene, Texas.
