Cam McDowell named WAC Newcomer of the Week

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State transfer Cam McDowell was tabbed the WAC's Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.

McDowell earns his first WAC weekly honor of the season and is the second Texan to be recognized. The senior becomes the second Texan to win newcomer of the week this season, marking the first time that multiple Texans were recognized with the honor in the same season. The Texans are the only program to have a pair of different players named the newcomer of the week and a Texan has won the award in three of the first five weeks of the season.

McDowell notched back-to-back games of 20+ points this past week. He became the second Texan this season to reach the mark in back-to-back games joining Dior Johnson and the third Texan to record at least two 20+ games this season also joining Chris Mpaka. The senior ranked second in the league averaging 23.0 points per game this week. His 46 total points was second in the WAC and 30th in the nation for the week. Both games, McDowell came off the bench contributing to the Texans' 475 total bench points this season that tops the NCAA.

He started the week with a game-best 20 points against Howard Payne. McDowell played 21.5 minutes off the bench and made eight of his 13 from the floor and a pair of three pointers. He also grabbed eight boards, tying his season best. The senior also dished out three assists and nabbed three steals.

On the final game of the week for McDowell he broke his season high once again with 26 points in 22 minutes against Cameron. The senior accounted for 14 points in a 16-0 Texan first half run including the final nine-straight to boost the Texans. His 26 total points was a team-high for the second consecutive game. McDowell made 10 of his 14 shots from the floor and shot three-for-four from long-range. In addition, he was a perfect three-for-three from the charity stripe. He also contributed on defense tallying three steals.

Tarleton State will have eight days off before their final non-conference road trip of the season. The Texans will head to Itta Bena, Miss. to take on Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 16. Tip is slated for 6 p.m. at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
