GCU snaps Tarleton State Women’s Basketball’s win streak

PHOENIX – Grand Canyon ended Tarleton State Women's Basketball's five-game win streak on Thursday, defeating the Texans 76-60 at the Global Credit Union Arena at GCU.

The Lopes, the WAC standings leader, won their 21st consecutive game to extend the second-longest active win streak in Division I women's basketball.

Senior guard Jakoriah Long led the Texans with 18 points and eight rebounds, her fourth game in a row with at least 18 points. Senior guard Miannah Little added 11 points, hitting two 3-pointers in the process.

Trading baskets to open the first quarter, GCU took the early lead after scoring on back-to-back offensive possessions. GCU extended its lead off a Tarleton State turnover, but Little quickly tied it up with a 3-pointer. The senior from Waco, Texas, scored eight consecutive points for the Texans to tie it up once again with just over four minutes left to play in the period.

GCU regained the advantage moments later with a 3-pointer before a second-chance jumper from senior forward Elise Turrubiates cut the deficit to one point. The Lopes again took advantage of a Texan turnover, with GCU's Trinity San Antonio hitting a jumper to make it an 18-15 lead in the closing seconds of the opening period.

The Texans used back-to-back layups to open the second quarter that allowed Tarleton State to cut the deficit to two points after a GCU 3-pointer. The Lopes, however, responded with eight unanswered points to move ahead by double-digits. Tarleton State looked to cut the deficit, with Long hitting a 3-pointer before two Texan free throws. The Texans were held to just 33.3% second quarter shooting, allowing the Lopes to take a 13-point lead into the locker room.

GCU opened the second half on a 8-0 scoring run, allowing the Lopes to move ahead by 21. The Lopes finished the third quarter shooting 63.6% to take a 61-41 lead entering the final 10 minutes.

The Texans continued to fight in the fourth quarter and got a lift from a pair of senior guards. Senior Niki Van Wyk knocked down a pair of 3-pointers while fellow senior Tyler Jackson scored all seven of her points in the final period. GCU's lead, however, was too much for the Texans to overcome.

Tarleton State continues its road swing this week on Saturday at Seattle U at 3 p.m.
