Bobcats defeat Tarleton State Tennis in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Tarleton State Tennis fell short at Texas State and lost to the Bobcats 4-2 on Friday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.

Freshman Maria Castano remained undefeated in singles this year with a straight sets victory over Sofia Fortuno 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot. Castano, who picked up her sixth singles win on her birthday, is the first Tarleton State freshman in the Division I Era to win in each of her first six singles matches. It is the second straight season the Texans have had a player start singles with a 6-0 record.

Tarleton State's doubles teams of Noelia Lorca/Ximena Morales and Clara Sobius/Castano both picked up victories to help the Texans clinch the doubles point. Castano/Sobius picked up their fourth win of the season as a team, dominating Callie Creath/Kiana Graham 6-1. Lorca/Morales, the WAC Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 4, picked up their second doubles win as a duo and sealed the doubles point for the Texans with a 6-4 win over Chantajah Mills/Ireland Simme.

Texas State, however, responded by taking over in singles. Emma Persson was defeated by Kiana Graham 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles spot. Sobius fell to Emily Niers in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in No. 5 singles that gave Texas State a one-point lead in the match.

Castano's singles win on court three tied the match 2-2, but the Bobcats edged out the Texans by collecting a pair of three-set victories. Simme defeated Tarleton State junior Adeliya Mukhutdinova 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 on Court 6. The Bobcats clinched the match on Court 4 when Tadiwa Mauchi defeated Morales 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

"We fought hard, but came up short in a great match," head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron said. "Maria was impressive again. She continues to exceed expectations and compete with her heart. I'm proud of how our entire team competed against a very good Texas State team. We will keep working hard and we will bounce back."

Tarleton State continues its Texas road trip this weekend, traveling to San Antonio to take on UTSA at 1 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
