SAN ANTONIO – Tarleton State Tennis' valiant effort against American Athletic Conference foe UTSA came up short on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Complex, with the Roadrunners defeating the Texans 4-3.
Juniors
Emma Persson and
Adeliya Mukhutdinova both picked up singles wins on Saturday, with Persson picking up a doubles win with senior
Maretha Burger. Mukhutdinova, a transfer from UTSA, picked up her fourth singles win of the season.
Despite trailing early on Court 1, Persson/Burger climbed all the way back in doubles and picked up the win 6-3 over UTSA's Valeria Sanchez/Ekua Youri. After senior
Noelia Lorca and
Ximena Morales fell short on Court 2, freshman
Maria Castano and junior
Clara Sobius came in the clutch on Court 3. Castano/Sobius picked up their fifth win as a duo, defeating UTSA's Natalia Guerro and Aoka Nagasawa 6-4 to capture the doubles point for the Texans.
UTSA, however, responded with singles wins on Court 5 and Court 4 to take over the team lead 2-1. Mukhutdinova kept the Texans in the match with her performance on Court 6 and tied the team score. The Boca Raton, Florida, native took care of business in straight sets against her former team, only dropping one game in the second set for a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Guerrero.
The Roadrunners looked to clinch the match after obtaining victory on Court 2, but the Texans refused to quit. Persson persevered in the first set on Court 1 to take the early lead, narrowly clinching the tiebreak. The Swedish junior finished the job for her fourth singles win of the season, defeating Letizia Corsini 7-6(5), 7-5 in straight sets.
The deciding team point came down to the action on Court 3, with Castano looking to keep her undefeated singles record. UTSA's Vittoria Baccino grabbed the upper hand early in the match, clinching set one 6-4. Castano responded with a 6-3 set two win to force a third set.
Baccino took command in set three 5-3, but Castano won the next game to stay alive. UTSA, however, clinched the match after Baccino won the next game and handed Castano her first loss of the season 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
