SAN ANTONIO – Tarleton State Tennis completed its Texas road trip this weekend with a 6-1 win at Incarnate Word on Sunday at the Mabry Tennis Center.
In addition to sweeping doubles action again, the Texans won three singles courts by three sets and took singles on five of the six courts on Sunday.
Senior Maretha Burger picked up her first singles win of the season on Court 6, defeating McKenzy Byfield in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. This was Burger's first singles appearance since March 1, 2024 and picked up her seventh singles win in a Tarleton State uniform on Sunday.
The Texans went out on top to start the match, clinching the doubles point with three wins. Senior Noelia Lorca and freshman Maria Castano won on Court 2 6-3 while juniors Adeliya Mukhutdinova and Clara Sobius picked up a victory on Court 3 6-2. Burger and junior Emma Persson picked up their sixth win as a doubles duo with a 7-6 (3) win on Court 1 to give the Texans the doubles sweep.
Both Burger and Persson kept that momentum in singles, with Burger getting the win on Court 6 and Persson coming out victorious on Court 1. After winning set one through the tiebreak, Persson picked up a bagel (6-0 set) in set two for a 7-6, 6-0 straight sets win.
A Texan trio had to battle its way to victory in three sets, with Lorca and Castano both coming from behind. After Lorca was defeated 6-1 in set one on Court 2, the senior stormed back in set two and won six of the eight games to force a third set. The WAC Fall Invitational Singles champion completed the come-from-behind victory and won in three sets 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
After losing set one 6-4, Castano battled back in set two to win 6-4 and forced a third set. Castano finished the job and won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 for her seventh singles win of the season. Mukhutdinova split the first two sets with her opponent on Court 4 and clinched the win in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
"This was a great win for our seniors," head coach
Elianne Douglas-Miron said. "Maretha really stepped up for us and played a great match. She was focused and energized and it was great to see her compete in singles today. Noelia had great energy today and battled against a strong UIW opponent. We fought hard this weekend and got better. We look forward to being back in Stephenville this weekend."
