Texan Baseball falls in close battle with nationally ranked TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – Tarleton State Baseball (3-5) came up short against the No. 25 nationally ranked TCU Horned Frogs (6-2) 2-4 on Tuesday evening.

This was the second consecutive Big 12 opponent for Tarleton State and their first game against a ranked opponent this season.

Jaime Perez led the way offensively, keeping his hit streak alive with a team-high two hits on Tuesday night. Perez now has at least one hit in all six of his appearances. The senior also scored one of the two runs for the Purple and White.

Tyson Drake hit a leadoff single and stole second base. Tarleton State, however, was unable to capitalize and went scoreless in the first stanza. The Horned Frogs drove in a runner via a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning to take a one-run lead.

Texan pitcher Ben Bosse orchestrated two scoreless innings of baseball and produced a critical double play in the third inning to keep the game at 1-0. Bosse recorded two strikeouts before being relieved in the fourth inning.

The Texans had three straight singles to start the fourth inning, starting with Rayner Heinrich. Perez then notched a single, followed by Trace Morrison who drove in Heinrich to even the game up. Slade McCloud sacrificed on an RBI that scored Perez, turning the tables in Tarleton State's favor, 2-1.

The Horned Frogs responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth, scattering across three hits and a walk to put them up 3-2. Despite a walk from Lane Brewster and a single from Perez in the fifth inning, the game remained in favor of the Horned Frogs after Tarleton State fell victim to a pair of strikeouts.

TCU looked to extend its lead further in the bottom of the fifth, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Tarleton State pitcher Ethan Jaques stepped up, delivering two consecutive strikeouts and a groundout to keep the Texans within reach and hold TCU to a scoreless inning.

The Horned Frogs drove in a runner in the seventh inning to make the game 4-2. Tarleton State couldn't recover in time and ultimately dropped their first road matchup of the season.

The Purple and White will return to Stephenville where they will host a four-game series against St. Thomas (Feb. 28 – March 2). Get tickets here.
