Tarleton State Women’s Basketball begins postseason play at WAC Tournament Wednesday

LAS VEGAS – Tarleton State Women's Basketball begins postseason play on Wednesday, taking on Southern Utah in the WAC Tournament at the Orleans Arena. 

The Texans lifted themselves into second place in the WAC standings and earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Tarleton State's highest seed in a Division I conference tournament. Tarleton State is seeking its first conference tournament championship in the Division I Era and its first postseason tournament appearance in the transition period. 

Taking on the seven-seeded Thunderbirds in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Tarleton State seeks its first conference tournament semifinal appearance in the Division I Era. The winner of Wednesday's game will face the winner of the UT Arlington-California Baptist quarterfinal game. 

The game will be available to watch on ESPN+ and fans can listen to Clayton Neville's radio call on Tarleton Sports Network. Neville will have a 30-minute pregame show starting at 4 p.m. and a 30-minute postgame show will follow each game. 

MATCHUP NOTES
  • Tarleton State and Southern Utah will meet for the seventh time. The Texans lead the series 4-2 and won the previous matchup 74-53 in Cedar City.
  • The Texans enter the WAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed, its highest seed in a Division I conference tournament. The Thunderbirds are the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament. 
  • Tarleton State seeks its first semifinal appearance in a conference tournament in the Division I Era. 
LONG LETTING LOOSE
  • Tarleton State Women's Basketball senior guard Jakoriah Long leads the Texans in WAC play, averaging over 13 points per game. She was named to the All-WAC Second Team on Monday.
  • Long had back-to-back 25-point outings Feb. 6-8, being named WAC Player of the Week in the process.
  • The senior guard set a new Division I Era single game program record with seven made 3-pointers twice this season, most recently doing so against CBU (3/6).
  • Long's 70% shooting from beyond the arc against CBU (3/6) is the second-highest 3-point percentage by a Texan in a single game in the Division I Era. She is just the second Texan in the Division I Era to hit 70% of her 3-pointers off a minimum of seven attempts.
  • Long is the first Texan in the Division I Era to post two consecutive 25-point games. She is the first Texan since the 2013-14 season to post back-to-back games with at least 25 points (Kiara Wright, Feb. 5-8, 2014).
  • She also became the first Texan in the Division I Era to have back-to-back games with six or more 3-pointers. She is the first Texan since the 2011-12 season to have two consecutive games with six or more 3-pointers (Peyton Adamson, Jan. 11-14, 2012). 
EXPECT MORE, DEMAND MORE 
  • The theme for Tarleton State Women's Basketball in 2024-25 is "Expect More, Demand More".
  • Picked to finish sixth in the WAC preseason poll, Tarleton State finished second in the conference standings and has won 19 games.
  • The 19 wins in 2024-25 are the most by a Texan team in the Division I Era.
  • The Texans clinched their first postseason conference tournament win in the NCAA Division I Era, defeating in-state rival Abilene Christian 54-41 in the 2024 WAC Tournament for their first Division I conference tournament.
  • Tarleton State is now NCAA postseason eligible in Division I. 
WINNER WINNER, RECORD BREAKERS 
  • In its first season of postseason eligibility, Tarleton State is off to a historic season in its fifth year at the Division I level.
  • Senior guard Jakoriah Long set a new Division I program record of seven made 3-pointers in two different games this season, most recently against CBU (3/6).
  • On December 7, 2024, Tarleton State set a new Division I program record for rebounds with 59 in one game against LeTourneau.
  • Freshman guard Grace Booth's 13 rebounds against LeTourneau (12/7) set a new Division I Era program record for most boards in a single game by a Tarleton State freshman.
  • Senior guard Arieona Rosborough currently has the program's Division I Era single season records for offensive rebounds (80) and made free throws (112).
  • Sophomore center Faith Acker made 10 of her 11 shots and scored a season-high 21 points to go with nine rebounds in the win at Arkansas State (12/19). Acker's 90.9% shooting set a new single game Division I program record with the highest field goal percentage (min. 10 shot attempts).
  • Acker also broke the D1 Era single season program record for defensive rebounds and total rebounds earlier this season.
