UTA pulls away late to defeat Tarleton State Women’s Basketball in WAC Semifinals

LAS VEGAS – Tarleton State Women's Basketball fell victim to a late fourth quarter run by UT Arlington and was defeated by the Lady Mavs 66-55 in the 2025 WAC Tournament Semifinals at the Orleans Arena on Friday.

With a second-place finish in the WAC, the Texans earned an automatic bid to the Women's National Invitational Tournament. Powered by Triple Crown Sports and entering its 27th season of rewarding the depth found in women's college basketball, the WNIT will take place starting Thursday, March 20. The full 48-team field will be announced late Sunday evening after the NCAA Tournament Selection Show. The full bracket will be announced on Monday, March 17.

Sophomore center Faith Acker recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, co-leading the Texans in scoring on Friday. All-WAC Second Team guard Jakoriah Long added 12 points to go with a career-high four blocked shots. Senior guard Arieona Rosborough recorded her third double-double in a Texan uniform with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The second semifinal game of the WAC Tournament proved it was going to be a battle, with both teams trading baskets to keep the score tied. Free throws from Long allowed the Texans to take the lead before senior guard Niki Van Wyk came off the bench and knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Texans a five-point cushion. UT Arlington's Nya Threatt answered with two layups in the last minute and a half of the first quarter to make it a 15-14 game.

The Lady Mavs took the lead off two buckets to open the second quarter, but the Texans scored on two of their next three possessions to tie up the score. Tarleton State once again responded with a second-chance basket from Acker to take the lead before a four-minute scoring drought from both teams. Long ended the drought with a jumper before a UTA layup made it a 24-23 game in favor of the Texans at halftime.

Tarleton State made it a two-possession game off a pair of baskets to open the third period. UT Arlington, however, tied the game from the free throw line and grabbed the advantage off a pair of layups. The Lady Mavs went up by five points after a layup, but Rosborough answered with a jumper to cut UTA's lead 42-39 heading into the final period.

A 3-pointer by senior guard Miannah Little opened the fourth quarter with a tied game, with a jumper from Long giving the Texans a two-point lead. The Lady Mavs regained the upper hand off a basket and two free throws before Long's pair from the charity strike tied it up with three minutes left in regulation.

UTA's Kendal Robinson drained the go-ahead 3-pointer and hit a basket while drawing a foul to give the Lady Mavs a 57-52 advantage with 1:45 left to play. The Lady Mavs forced Tarleton State to miss five of its final six shots, sinking nine of their last 10 free throws in the process to advance to the WAC Tournament Championship.

Tarleton State awaits its opponent, location, date and tipoff time for the 2025 WNIT. The full WNIT bracket will be released on Monday.
