Texan Baseball falls in heartbreaker to LMU

Box Score LOS ANGELES, California - Tarleton State Baseball (9-11) dropped their Saturday evening matchup to the Loyola Marymount Lions (11-8) at Page Stadium, 5-4.

The Texans notched seven hits opposed to the Lions' six. Tarleton State left seven runners on base while LMU left four. Additionally, both bullpens tallied double-digit strikeouts.

Brian Panneton received the start at the mound for the Texans. Panneton pitched five innings and struck out six batters, marking two new season highs for the junior.

Loyola Marymount got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame. This was fueled by two consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly from Kolton Freeman that drove in Cam Hassert. Neither team put up a run in the second inning, keeping the game 1-0 in favor of the Lions.

The Texans' offense caught fire in the third stanza, where they put up four runs. This was orchestrated by four hits, a walk and a defensive miscue from the Lions. Trace Morrison got things going with a leadoff double, followed by a Raef Wright single to advance Morrison to third. Rayner Heinrich sacrificed to bring in Morrison for the tying run, making it a brand new ballgame.

Tyson Drake kept things going for the Purple and White, tallying a walk and a steal to set himself up in scoring position. Jaime Perez capitalized off this by hitting a single to left field, scoring Drake and achieving his 16th RBI of the season. The third inning was capped off by a double from Carson Lorch that drove in Perez, extending the Texans' lead to three runs. Saturday's game marked Lorch's second consecutive outing with an extra-base hit.

LMU tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth stanza thanks to an RBI double from Robbie Ayers. The Purple and White found themselves leading 4-2 after five innings of baseball.

Aden Lucas and Ethan Jaques both orchestrated a scoreless inning apiece during the sixth and seventh innings, holding the Lions scoreless. Neither team could scratch off any runs, keeping the matchup at 4-2.

Ike Shirey launched a triple in the eighth frame for his fifth extra-base hit of the season. Tarleton State was unable to capitalize off of this, going down on strikeouts to end the inning.

Loyola Marymount struck out on their first two at-bats, bringing the Texans just one out away from tying up the series. However, the Lions put together a late-game rally to give them life with two outs on the board. Nate Savoie began the rally with a hit-by-pitch, followed by a double from Ayers that advanced him to third. After Colby Wallace drew a walk on a full count to load the bases, Joe Reid blasted a three-RBI double to walk off the game in dramatic fashion, propelling the Lions to a 5-4 victory.

Tarleton State Baseball will look to bounce back tomorrow when they close out the series at 3:30 p.m. central. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats can be found here.
