Each team tallied more than 10 hits in the high-scoring battle, with Tarleton State registering 11 hits to Tech's 15. The Red Raiders notched eight strikeouts opposed to Tarleton State's two. The Purple and White had three batters with multiple hits while Texas Tech had five.
Reigning WAC Player of the Week
Rayner Heinrich got things started with a lead-off double in the first inning, marking his fourth consecutive game with a lead-off hit.Â
Jaime Perez got on base via a hit-by-pitch and then stole second while Heinrich stole third, putting both runners in fantastic position.
Carson Lorch walked to load the bases but the Texans struck out, leaving the first inning scoreless.
Peyton Fiene opened up the first couple of innings at the bump for Tarleton State, putting together two innings of work and only allowing one run. Texas Tech loaded the bases early and got on the board first thanks to an RBI single from Logan Hughes, keeping the bases full with no outs. The Texans were able to get out of the jam, drawing two pop-outs and a great defensive play from
Trace Morrison to throw out Damian Bravo at home.
The Purple and White got things rolling at the top of the second frame when
Sergio Guerra blasted a lead-off double. This was followed by a defensive miscue from the Red Raiders, putting
Ike Shirey on base. Guerra scored off a wild pick-off attempt that advanced Shirey to third, then Heinrich extended the lead with a sacrifice fly to score Shirey. After a scoreless inning from Fiene, the Texans left the second stanza with a 2-1 lead.
Tarleton State had their best inning in the fourth frame, accumulating three runs, three hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Morrison got on base first and then advanced to third via a single from Shirey. Brewster singled immediately after, scoring Morrison to extend the lead to two runs. Heinrich then notched his second extra-base hit of the afternoon, a double that brought in Shirey. Perez did his job at the plate, sacrificing to score Brewster and giving the Texans a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.
The Texans kept their foot on the gas in the fifth frame, tacking on two more runs to make it a 7-1 ballgame. After Lorch was hit by a pitch, Morrison singled and Guerra doubled, scoring Lorch and putting them both in scoring position. Shirey grounded out to bring in Morrison, capping off a stellar five innings for Tarleton State.
Texas Tech did not let this scoring spurt go unanswered, putting up four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Garet Boehm blasted a lead-off home run to get the momentum going for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech would tack on three consecutive singles to score another run, then a walk to reload the bases. Two flyouts would give the Raiders their fourth run of the inning, cutting the Texans' lead to just two runs.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Tarleton State couldn't put up any runs in the seventh despite a lead-off single from Lorch. In the bottom of the seventh, Texas Tech would completely sway the game in their favor, scratching off five more runs on six hits and making the ballgame 10-7.
The Purple and White were unable to respond to Tech's late rally and ultimately dropped the first meeting between the two squads, 10-7. Tarleton State Baseball will look to get back on track when they take on Sacramento State this weekend to open up WAC play. Get tickets
