Tarleton State Baseball falls in high scoring series finale

Box Score

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Tarleton State Texans (4-8) dropped the fourth and final game of this weekend's series to the St. Thomas Tommies (5-3) at the Tarleton State Baseball Complex, 14-12.

This marked the last home game for the Texans until they travel to Waco on Tuesday to face Baylor. The Bears will be the third Big 12 opponent on the Texans' schedule.

The offense was rolling on Sunday for the Purple and White, tallying 14 hits as a team during the loss. Rayner Heinrich and Sergio Guerra led the way with two doubles apiece. Heinrich now has five extra base hits this season in just seven appearances.

The Tommies put up the first run of the game via a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Guerra responded at the bottom of the stanza, registering a double that drove in Heinrich to tie the game, 1-1.

St. Thomas would tack on two more runs in the second inning from a fielding error by the Texans. Tarleton State, however, responded with a three-run second inning that contained a two-RBI double from Tyson Drake that scored Lane Brewster and Slade McCloud. This extended Drake's hit streak to 11 games, the highest active hit streak on the team.

The Texans and Tommies stayed scoreless through the fourth inning despite leadoff doubles for both teams. Mason Kirk sacrificed to drive in Blake Wilson in the fifth inning, making the game 6-3 in favor of the Texans.

St. Thomas had three consecutive hits in the sixth (single, triple, home run) which ultimately tied the game up at 6-6. The Texans retaliated with their best inning of the ballgame, notching six runs on four hits and two walks. Guerra notched another RBI that scored Heinrich. McCloud sacrificed to score Trace Morrison, followed by a pivotal RBI single from Blake Wilson on a full count. The inning was capped off by a two-RBI double from Kirk to make the ballgame 12-6.

The Tommies notched two singles, two doubles and a home run in the top of the seventh inning, rallying St. Thomas back to within one run. In the eighth inning, Joe Roder singled and then advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring off a single from Max Moris. This tied the game up, 12-12.

After a scoreless eighth inning from the Purple and White, Easton Fritcher turned the tables in the Tommies' favor, tallying a double with only one out on the board. Tanner Recchio and Matthew Maulik tacked on two RBI singles, giving St. Thomas a 14-12 advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Tarleton State was unable to rally back, dropping the final game, 14-12 and the series, 1-3. The Texans will look to bounce back against the Baylor Bears on Tuesday evening at the Baylor Ballpark.
