Texan Baseball falls to Baylor in Waco

WACO, Texas – Tarleton State Baseball (4-9) dropped their midweek matchup on Tuesday to Baylor (9-3). Tarleton State was unable to notch the win against their third Big 12 opponent of the year, losing 7-2.

The Bears outhit the Texans 10 to four. Baylor also drew seven walks on Tuesday evening opposed to Tarleton State's two. The Bears' bullpen accumulated 11 strikeouts while the Texans posted five. Each team registered only one steal.

The Purple and White took an early advantage during the first inning. Rayner Heinrich drew a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jaime Perez hit a single to advance Heinrich to third, then Perez stole second to set both runners up in scoring position. Ike Shirey drove them in with a two-RBI single, making the game 2-0 in favor of the Texans.

Tyler Olson produced a critical double play ball to keep the Bears scoreless in the first inning. The game stayed scoreless until the third inning when the Bears scored via a sacrifice fly, then drove in two more runs thanks to a two-RBI single from Ty Johnson. This put Baylor back in the driver's seat, giving them a 3-2 lead.

Tarleton State was unable to get on base during the fourth and fifth innings. The Bears tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth which was fueled by four hits, two of them being doubles. Baylor left the fifth inning with a four-run lead.

Heinrich singled in the sixth inning to break Tarleton's cold streak. This marked the eighth hit of the season for the freshman, who has appeared in just eight games. The Purple and White were unable to drive in Heinrich and still faced a four-run deficit after the conclusion of the top of the sixth.

In the seventh inning, Baylor drew three consecutive walks to load the bases without an out. After a single that gave the Bears their seventh run of the evening, Peyton Fiene struck out two consecutive batters and produced a popout to keep the game within five runs.

Andrew Hardin and R.J. Johnston pitched a scoreless inning apiece during the seventh and eighth stanzas. Tarleton State, however, was unable to put up any runs and ultimately dropped the game 7-2.
