Utah Valley defeats Tarleton State Women’s Basketball in regular season finale

OREM, Utah – Tarleton State Women's Basketball was defeated by Utah Valley 75-58 on Saturday at the UCCU Center in the final game of the regular season.

Despite the loss, the Texans finished second in the WAC and earned the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament in Las Vegas next week. The No. 2 seed is the Texans' highest seed in a Division I conference tournament.

Sophomore center Faith Acker led the Texans with a career-high 23 points while grabbing nine rebounds, breaking the program's Division I single season rebounding record in the process. Acker now owns both the total rebounds (187) and defensive rebounds (133) Division I single season program record. The Winnsboro, Texas, native also blocked two shots, moving up to 14th on the program's career blocks list.

Senior guard Arieona Rosborough added 10 points, going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Her three steals on Saturday brought her career total to 200.

Utah Valley and Tarleton State traded baskets in the opening period before senior Elise Turrubiates converted a layup to give the Texans the lead. The Wolverines responded with back-to-back 3-pointers, igniting a 10-0 scoring run to stretch their lead. Turrubiates tamed the Wolverines by knocking down a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to make it a 22-16 game through one quarter.

The Texans cut the deficit to five halfway through the second quarter, but Utah Valley drained two straight 3-pointers to take a double-digit advantage. Tarleton State cut the deficit down to single digits on two separate occasions before Utah Valley answered with baskets of its own. Utah Valley forced the Texans into 10 first half turnovers to take a 14-point lead into the locker room.

Acker scored the first six points of the third quarter to lead the Texans' comeback, but Utah Valley kept responding. The Texans used a 6-0 scoring run in the middle of the third quarter before Utah Valley answered with six consecutive free throws. Utah Valley scored on three of its final four offensive possessions in the third quarter to take a 58-46 lead.

Two straight baskets from the Texans allowed them to cut Utah Valley's deficit to eight points, but that was as close as the Wolverines let it get. Utah Valley shot 52.1% in the fourth quarter while holding Tarleton State to just 25% shooting in the final period to secure the win.

Tarleton State's postseason journey begins on Wednesday at the WAC Tournament in Las Vegas, taking on No. 7 seed Southern Utah at the Orleans Arena at 4:30 p.m.
