ABILENE, Texas - Tarleton State Baseball (21-31, 9-12 WAC) lost to the Abilene Christian Wildcats (29-19, 13-8 WAC) on Sunday afternoon at Crutcher Scott Field, 12-11.
Each team recorded double-digit hits, with the Texans notching 11 opposed to ACU's 13. Sunday's 23 combined runs marked the most out of any game over the three-game series.
After the Texans went scoreless in the top of the first inning, the Wildcats took an early 3-0 lead thanks to a two-run home run from Benjamin Greer and a sacrifice fly from Reese Bohro that scored Diego Cardenas.
The Purple and White got things going in the top of the third stanza, where they scored their first run of the ballgame.
Jaime Perez registered a lead-off single, followed by a single from
Lane Brewster that advanced him to second. With one out on the board,
Tyson Drake stepped up and lifted an RBI double off the center field wall, driving in Perez to cut the lead to two.
Karsen Davis came in to pitch for the Texans in the bottom of the third, putting down all three batters via swinging strikeouts. Davis finished the game with a team-high three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
Abilene Christian extended their lead in the fourth frame, putting up four runs on a scoring spurt that contained back-to-back RBI doubles from Nick Arias and Braden Regala. The four-run inning was capped off by a two-RBI double from Greer, making the ballgame 6-1. ACU continued to build upon their lead in the bottom of the fifth with another four runs to extend their lead to nine. The fifth frame was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Cardenas.
Tarleton State dented the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Sergio Guerra, who leads the conference in slugging percentage, blasted a lead-off solo home run for TSU's second run of the afternoon. Shortly after Guerra homered,
Ike Shirey launched an RBI triple to score Brewster. Drake recorded his second RBI of the contest with a sacrifice fly that brought in Shirey, but the Texans still trailed 10-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh. The ballgame remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth frame when Arias drew a walk with the bases loaded, giving ACU their 11th run.Â
With one last shot in the top of the ninth, Tarleton State orchestrated a fantastic rally to keep them alive. Shirey and Drake had back-to-back walks to start the inning, followed by a home run from
Rayner Heinrich which marked his third deep ball of the series. The freshman finished the series with a team-high 10 RBIs across the three-game stint.
After
Trace Morrison reached base on an error, the Texans went down via a flyout and a groundout. However, the Purple and White still had some fight left in them. Guerra came in clutch with a two-run bomb to right field, notching his second home run of the game to make it 11-9. The senior is now tied with Drake for the most home runs on the squad with 11.
Perez kept Tarleton State alive with a single, bringing Brewster to the plate for the tying run. After reaching a full count, down to the final pitch, Brewster did the unthinkable and blasted a two-run home run to tie the game up at 11-11. This was Brewster's second home run of the season and his first sice 5/22/25.
Despite the late rally, the Purple and White fell victim to a walk-off single from Bohro in the bottom of the ninth, ultimately dropping the series finale 12-11. They will look to bounce back in their final home series of the regular season against Grand Canyon. The series starts Thursday and fans can find tickets
