Texans drop series opener to Lancers in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Tarleton State Baseball (20-27, 8-8 WAC) fell to California Baptist (24-22, 7-9 WAC) in the series opener on Friday evening, losing 6-2.

The Texans tallied six hits while the Lancers had 10. California Baptist had nine strikeouts opposed to Tarleton State's four. The Texans did not register an error while the Lancers had two.

Newcomers Rayner Heinrich and Carson Lorch lead the way with two hits apiece. Lorch posted two RBIs, accounting for both of Tarleton State's runs.

Rayner Heinrich started the ballgame with a lead-off double for the Purple and White, achieving his first of two hits on the evening. Despite Heinrich setting himself up in scoring position, Tarleton State was unable to score in the first frame.

The Lancers got on the board in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double from Nicholas Dumesnil, giving them an early 1-0 advantage. Brian Panneton pitched two scoreless innings and the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Ben Castelli launched a solo home run that extended the Lancers' lead to two.

The Purple and White remained scoreless during the top of the fifth stanza despite a single from Ike Shirey. California Baptist accumulated two more runs in the bottom of the frame off a spurt that contained another RBI double from Dumesnil and a sacrifice fly from Jake Brown.

Tarleton State responded in the top of the sixth inning, putting up two runs off three hits. Heinrich tallied his second hit of the night with a lead-off single, followed by a walk from Jaime Perez and a single from Slade McCloud to load the bases. Carson Lorch took advantage of this opportunity, blasting a two-RBI double off the wall to score Heinrich and Perez. This marked Lorch's fourth hit in his last two games, cutting the Lancers' lead back to two runs.

After a pitching substitution from the Purple and White, California Baptist tacked on another home run when Andrew Walters lifted a two-run shot to left field that scored himself and Ryan Kim.

Ethan Jaques and Parrish Beagle closed out the game for the Texans, pitching a combined two scoreless innings. Tarleton State, however, couldn't climb back and eventually dropped Friday's game 6-2. The Texans will look to respond on Saturday at 6 p.m. central during the second game of last year's WAC Championship rematch.
