Texan Soccer ends Alcorn State matchup in tough draw

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The Texans ended their matchup with Alcorn State in a tough draw Thursday evening, tying the game 1-1 late in the second half.

Emma Barnes made two great back-to-back saves in the first half to keep the score 0-0. Both shots by Lady Braves' Annick Zouma came from nearly the same spot at the top of the box only minutes apart from each other.

Jaycie Bass had a great scoring opportunity in the 20th minute of the game. Off an Alcorn State turnover, Bass fired a shot from the top center of the box but was just wide right of the goal.

Alcorn State was the first to put a score on the board. Two minutes into the second half, Lady Braves' Ainara Aldeano scored off a throw-in by her teammate, firing the ball just past Texan goalkeeper Mikayla Kendall from the corner of the goalie area.

The Texans had another great opportunity later in the first half. Coming off a kick from the far-left corner of the field, Zoe Ballard headed the airborne ball from the right side of the box, but it went flying over the top of the goal.

With only seven minutes left in the game, senior forward Stevie Reynolds put the Texans on the board, tying the game 1-1. After receiving a cross from Bass from just outside the left corner of the box, Adelaide Wyrzynski sent another cross over to Reynolds. Reynolds headed the ball towards the goal, bouncing it off the Alcorn State goalkeeper, and then sent it flying into the back of the net.

Both Emma Barnes and Mikayla Kendall made appearances during the match. Barnes recorded four saves in the first half.

The Texans outshot the Lady Braves 17-11, with nine of those shot on goal. TSU gained only two fouls the entirety of the match, playing 21 of their 27-woman roster.

The Texans will kick off an action-packed Family Weekend for Tarleton State on Thursday, Sept. 18, closing out their five-game homestead with their matchup against Schreiner University at 7 p.m.
