Texan Soccer falls to Utah Valley in WAC opener

OREM, Utah - Tarleton State Women's Soccer fell to Utah Valley 5-0 in the WAC opener tonight at UCCU Stadium.

While it was a hard-fought match, the Texans (6-3-2 overall, 0-1 WAC) struggled to keep possession of the ball against the pressure applied by the Wolverines (5-4-1 overall, 1-0 WAC). Goalkeepers Emma Barnes and Mikayla Kendall were huge standouts in tonight's game, recording a combined 15 saves for the Texans.

Utah Valley started the match off with the first goal coming in the 18th minute. Dribbling in from the right side of the field, the ball was crossed to Faith Webber who fired it just past Barnes to put the Wolverines on the board.

Barnes had seven saves in the first half, including one in the 21st minute. Off a Wolverine throw in from the right side of the field, the ball was dribbled into the top of the box where it was shot but saved by Barnes in the center of the goal.

Tarleton State had a good chance at scoring when Gabrielle Williams took a shot from the left side of the box, but the ball was sent just wide of the goal.

Barnes put up another great save towards the end of the half. After scissoring the ball into the box, the Wolverines fired a shot from the top corner but it was deflected off the hands of Barnes.

Utah Valley scored a pair of goals to take a 3-0 halftime lead.

Kendall opened the second half of tonight's matchup in the net, making numerous big saves for Tarleton State. In the 58th minute, Kendall made her first save of the night against a shot sent from the top left corner of the box. Minutes later, Kendall made two more good saves from the left side of the box.

The Wolverines scored two more goals in the second half to secure their win in the WAC opener. Tarleton State recorded a combined total of 15 saves for the night and played 20 of their 27-woman roster.

Tarleton State will continue its conference week opener on Sunday, taking on California Baptist in Riverside, CA at 8 p.m.
