Tarleton State Women’s Basketball collects 1,000th program win with dub at Utah Tech

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Tarleton State Women's Basketball eclipsed the 1,000 wins mark as a program on Saturday with its 63-45 victory at Utah Tech at Burns Arena.

The Texans obtained their 1,000th win as a senior college dating back to the program's infancy. Tarleton State held Utah Tech to under 30% shooting while the Texans knocked down nine 3-pointers, their most in a WAC game this season.

Senior guard Jakoriah Long overcame an injury sustained in practice the previous night to lead all scorers with a season-high 20 points. Junior guard Caroline Lyles poured in a career-high 14 points and nine rebounds in her second career start. Senior guard Gia Adams added 13 points, including 11 in the first half.

"I thought we played very tough today," head coach Bill Brock said. "Jakoriah played tight to start the game, but she really got in a groove in the second half. Kudos to our trainer, Tyler Gilmore, for getting her the treatment so she could play today. Gia carried us in the first half again like she did on Thursday. Caroline was really good on offense, but she was very tough on the boards today. Shadasia (Brackens) wasn't feeling 100%, but she gave great effort. Utah Tech is hard to guard because their post players can shoot threes and they force your bigs to guard the perimeter. We executed very well in the last three minutes of the game and I'm very proud of our kids."

Freshman center Elodie Lutbert got the Texans' scoring started with a pair of baskets, but Utah Tech knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to take the early lead. The Texans answered by going 12-0 scoring run, with a layup from Lyles putting Tarleton State in front by eight. Utah Tech struck back with a 3-pointer before Adams answered again.

Adams scored a total of nine first quarter points, capped off by a steal and layup on a fastbreak. Tarleton State shot 40% in the opening period while holding Utah Tech to 22% shooting to take an early nine-point lead.

A layup by Long allowed the Texans to go up by double-digits, a margin they would maintain for the majority of the second period. A free throw and a layup from Utah Tech allowed the Trailblazers to cut the deficit 27-20 before a jumper from sophomore guard Mar'Cyah Willis put Tarleton State back up by nine. The Texans were held to just 25% shooting in the second quarter, but defense allowed Tarleton State to maintain a 30-21 advantage going into halftime.

After Adams got going in the first half, it was Long's turn to ignite the Texans' offense. Despite battling an injury sustained the night before in practice, that did not slow down the senior from Waco.

Long scored the first 11 points in the second half for the Texans, stretching the lead to double-digits. Utah Tech looked to chip at the deficit with a 3-pointer and a layup, but Lyles kept the Texans in front by 10 with a 3-pointer of her own. The Texans scored on their final two possessions of the third quarter, with freshman guard Nyah Buntun capping off the scoring with her first collegiate basket to put Tarleton State ahead 48-35.

Utah Tech did not fold in the last 10 minutes, opening the final period with the first two baskets while forcing the Texans to a five-minute scoring drought. After hitting a pair of free throws, Adams found Lutbert for a basket with 4:05 left to play. Lyles answered Utah Tech's three-point play, knocking down a 3-pointer on the Texans' next possession. The Texans knocked down their final three shots from beyond the arc to put the game out of reach, giving them their fifth straight win over the Trailblazers.

Tarleton State wraps up a three-game road trip at in-state rival, Abilene Christian, on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
