Tarleton State Volleyball falls at EKU

RICHMOND, Ky. – Tarleton State Volleyball lost its first road contest in United Athletic Conference play to Eastern Kentucky 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 17-25) on Thursday night at Baptist Health Arena.

EKU now holds the lone first-place spot in the UAC standings with its eighth win in a row. Tarleton State is now in a four-way tie for second place.

Freshman middle blocker Onita Davis led the Texans with nine kills while junior setter Peyton Fadal added 16 assists. Libero Leddy Rae Guinn had 11 digs and defensive specialist Alexa Earle posted a career-high 10 digs on Thursday night.

EKU opened the first set on a 5-0 scoring run before kills from Davis and senior middle blocker Madison Frank cut the early deficit to three points. The Colonels answered by getting four of the next five points to extend their lead, later going on a 3-0 scoring run to move ahead 16-8. The Texans countered by collecting three straight points capped off by a pair of service aces.

After EKU scored three unanswered points, Tarleton State scored the next three points in the opening set to stay alive. Despite Tarleton State scoring back-to-back points, EKU captured the set point off a kill from Emma Closurdo to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 win in the opening set.

The Texans capitalized off a pair of EKU attack errors early in the second set, tying the set at 11 off a block from Madison Rice-Locket and another EKU attack error. EKU scored two consecutive points to quickly take the lead in the second set again, with middle blocker Alyssa Dinh coming up with a kill to make it a one-point set. The Colonels quickly countered by scoring six of the next seven points to take a 19-13 lead.

Tarleton State cut the deficit to three points by obtaining five of six points to make it a 22-19 set. EKU, however, ended the second set on a 3-0 scoring run and took a 2-0 lead in the match thanks to another 25-19 set win.

The Texans made it a one-point set off a kill from Rice-Locket early in the third frame, but EKU once again came up with a response. EKU scored six unanswered points and never relinquished the lead after that. The Colonels finished the third set with a .441 attacking percentage to take the final frame 25-17 and close the match with a sweep.

Tarleton State continues its UAC road trip on Saturday, traveling to Clarksville, Tennessee, to take on Austin Peay at 11 a.m.
