Tarleton State Men’s Golf’s Bjornstrom named WAC Men’s Golfer of the Week

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Men's Golf freshman Maximilian Bjornstrom has been named WAC Men's Golfer of the Week, the conference announced Thursday. 

Bjornstrom led the Texans' player leaderboard with his second straight top 20 finish, finishing tied for 15th at the Bentwater Intercollegiate that finished up Tuesday. The freshman led the player leaderboard for the Texans in their second straight tournament. 

The Höllviken, Sweden, native shot his first eagle of the spring in just his second hole of the tournament. He shot a 3-under-par 68 in the first round, his third consecutive round with at least 3-under-par. Bjornstrom compiled a career-low 54-hole score of 216, beating his previous record by three strokes. 

Ending the fall tied for third on the player leaderboard with teammate Luis Buech, Bjornstrom had a 6-under-par performance to help the Texans clinch the FAU Invitational team title. He got 10 birdies for his career-best finishes, helping the Texans win their first-ever Division I team title. Bjornstrom cracked the top 10 for lowest 36-hole score by a Texan in the Division I era. 

Prior to his arrival in Stephenville, Bjornstrom was consistently in the top 10 in the Swedish Boys U21 rankings and won four titles in his amateur career. He was a member of the Swedish National Team and won the Danish Masters title on the Global Junior Tour. Bjornstrom had several top 10 finishes during his amateur career, including second place in the Slaget om Skane Elite #3 Tournament. He also placed third in the Global Junior Tour Masters Invitational and finished fourth at the City of Malmo WAGR Tour and in the Global Junior Tour Junior Games. 

Tarleton State will compete in the longest-running NCAA Division I Collegiate Golf tournament in the United States next week. The Texans will appear in the Border Olympics starting Monday, February 16 at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
