RETURNERS
Tarleton State is returning much of their top production from a season ago, bringing back four of its top-five leaders in batting average from those who qualified (Slade McCloud at .358, Ike Shirey at .319, Rayner Heinrich at .314 and Carson Lorch at .291). The Texans' top-six in OPS, regardless of qualification, are all back (Guerra at 1.168, McCloud at .956, Braden Gostisha at .911, Heinrich at .909, Shirey at 8.58 and Tyson Drake at .857). That includes their top-three home run hitters (Guerra and Drake with 12, McCloud with eight).
 
Nationally last year on the offensive end, Tarleton State was fourth in the nation in triples (26), 46th in stolen bases (106), 53rd in batting (.300), 62nd in runs scored (424), 65th in slugging percentage (.479), and 72nd in runs per game (7.6).

Pitching-wise, Tarleton State returns its top-three ERA leaders with Brian Panneton (3.69), Andrew Hardin (5.22) and Ethan Jaques (5.71). In WHIP, the Texans are returning their top-five leaders (Brendon Carter at 1.10, Panneton at 1.29, Jaques at 1.44, Hardin at 1.60 and Aden Lucas at 1.65). Among 23 of Tarleton State's wins last year, the Texans are returning 15 on their staff.
 
A LOOK AT THE WAC
The Western Athletic Conference is in its farewell season, as they align with the United Athletic Conference and take on the UAC name starting next year. Year-over-year, the WAC looks very different, going from nine teams to seven teams, losing Grand Canyon and Seattle U. The Lopes finished fourth in the WAC last year at 13-11, and the Redhawks took ninth at 8-16. This year, among the seven teams, there will be just 18 conference games per team. Among the 24 played last year, the top-seven spots were within four games of each other (Sacramento State and Abilene Christian at 15-9, UT Arlington at 11-13).
 
Entering 2026, Tarleton State has been voted to finish fifth among the seven teams:

SPIEHS ELEVATED
After the 2025 campaign, R.D. Spiehs was promoted to Associate Head Coach by head coach Fuller Smith. "R.D. has been an incredible asset to our program since the day he arrived," said Smith. "His wealth of knowledge, work ethic, and ability to connect with our players have been instrumental to our success. This promotion is a reflection of his dedication to Tarleton State Baseball, and I'm excited to continue building this program alongside him."
 
Over his first two seasons with TSU, Spiehs has coached numerous All-WAC pitchers and guided his staff to multiple WAC Pitcher of the Week honors. In 2024, Grant Garza posted a 10-1 record on the mound and earned First Team All-WAC recognition, while Brian Panneton and Reese Bassinger were named to the Second Team All-WAC.
 
Alongside Smith and Spiehs, Will Fox is new to the coaching staff, with returners Dustin Williams (assistant coach) and Mason Crews (Director of Player Development / Camp Director). Fox, a seasoned coach with Power Four conference experience, comes to Stephenville after six seasons on staff at Texas A&M, most recently serving as an assistant coach. He works with the Texans' infielders and hitters. During his time in Aggieland, Fox helped guide the Texas A&M to a 179-92 record, three NCAA Tournament berths, and two College World Series appearances. In 2023, Texas A&M reached the College World Series championship series for the first time in program history, finishing the season with a 53-15 record, tied for the second-most wins in school history.
 
Williams is entering his second season as an assistant coach for Tarleton State. Willaims works with and develops Tarleton State's catchers while assisting with the Texans' hitters. The former player at Oklahoma State was Missouri State's Director of Player Development from 2022-24.
Crews enters his second season on the coaching staff after a three-year playing career with the Texans, including a Western Athletic Conference Tournament title in his final season. At TSU, he played in 102 career games with 84 starts as a catcher.
 
BACK TOGETHER
New this season, there are two pairs reuniting for the 2026 campaign. First are the McCloud brothers, as Cage McCloud joins the Texans to play with his older brother Slade McCloud. Cage McCloud played last year at McLennan CC in Waco, where he appeared in 59 total games. Cage McCloud posted a batting average of .292, notching 47 hits in 161 at-bats with 51 walks. With McLennan, he won the Regional and Super Regional, plus won a National Player of the Week Award. Slade McCloud, of course, is one of Tarleton State's best returning players. Slade McCloud was an All-WAC First Team selection last year, and is Preseason All-WAC and the No. 10 second baseman among mid-major players and No. 40 overall entering the season, according to D1Baseball.com. In 2025, Slade McCloud led the Texans with a .358 batting average, collecting 78 hits in 218 at-bats, finishing the year with a career-high 45 runs scored, third most on the team. McCloud had the tied-most RBI on the team with 45 and posted a .541 slugging percentage with eight home runs. He was also a threat on the base paths, tallying 20 stolen bases on the season. The infielder was one of three players to start all 56 games for the Texans last season.
 
Also back together are head coach Fuller Smith and outfielder Jake Tatom. Tatom played for Smith at Sam Houston in 2023, a year the two won a WAC Tournament championship together and won a game in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional. The Bearkats finished the season 39-25 overall. Smith left that offseason to become head coach at Tarleton State, and Tatom departed for Houston, where he played the last two seasons. Last season for the Cougars, he batted .224 with a home run, three doubles and 13 RBI in 36 games. He also had 14 walks. At Sam Houston with Smith, Tatom played in 43 games as a true freshman and was selected to the 2023 All-WAC Tournament team as a designated hitter. He posted a 4-for-5 five RBI performance vs Grand Canyon (May 26) in an elimination game, plus had two walk-off hits during the regular season, the first being a two-run double vs Abilene Christian (April 8), followed by another RBI double vs UT Arlington (May 13). He went 2-for-4 against Tulane in game two of the 2023 Baton Rouge NCAA Regional
 
GUERRA CATCHING LOVE
Entering 2026, catcher Sergio Guerra has received notable national recognition. He was an All-WAC Second Team player last year, and took the lone catcher's spot on the Preseason All-WAC list. He is ranked as the No. 6 mid-major catcher in the country and No. 24 overall entering 2026, according to D1Baseball.com. Last season, Guerra appeared in 41 games, starting 39. He finished the year with a .354 batting average, recording 51 hits in 144 at-bats. Guerra belted 12 home runs on the year with 42 RBI, posting a 1.168 OPS. He posted a .439 on-base percentage and recorded a career high of 14 doubles. Defensively, Guerra made his presence known, throwing out 11 runners attempting to steal, with a .984 fielding percentage. He had a game-high 13 putouts against Butler on Feb. 15.
