Tarleton State Tennis wins fifth straight, defeats UIW 7-0

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Tennis capped off its homestand with a 7-0 win over Incarnate Word at the Tarleton State Tennis Facility on Sunday afternoon.

The Texans have now won five in a row, winning their 16th straight home match in the process. Their last loss in Stephenville came in the 2023-24 season.

Tarleton State did not lose a singles set and only lost one doubles match in Sunday's contest. Freshmen Aya Ishii and Marissa Minetti along with sophomore Maria Castano and senior Adeliya Mukhutdinova led the way for the Texans with victories in both singles and doubles.

"Yesterday was a tough match and very competitive. Every single court was a battle. We tried to play the match, but we got burned. We can't control the weather, but we can control our effort and that's what we did today," head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron said. "I'm really proud of the bounce back and response today. We competed very well."

The Texans clinched the doubles point with ease, with victories on Courts 2 and 3 putting Tarleton State ahead 1-0. Ishii/Minetti picked up their fifth win as a doubles duo with a 6-2 win over Vi Salcedo Franklin and Amelie Montalvo at No. 2 doubles. Castano/Mukhutdinova picked up a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles over McKenzy Byfield and Luci Paez Hernandez.

Ishii's dominance continued in singles, obtaining her third bagel of the season in the second set at No. 2 singles. The freshman from Tochigi, Japan, won her 12th straight set en route to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Amelia Perez Corona. Mukhutdinova answered with a bagel of her own in the first set en route to a dominating win at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-1.

Bagels continued to spread in singles for the Texans, with senior Ximena Morales picking up one in the first set. Her straight sets win at No. 3 singles clinched the match for the Texans.

Playing the rest of the matches out, it became clear the day belonged to the Texans. Minetti won at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-4 while Castano dominated the second set for a 6-3, 6-1 win on Court 1. Sophomore Duru Kuscu wrapped up the day with 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.

Tarleton State heads to Natchitoches, Louisiana, for a pair of matches starting Saturday at 11 a.m., taking on South Alabama and Northwestern State.
