STEPHENVILLE, Texas – App State needed just one more point to clinch Friday's match at the Tarleton State Tennis Facility, but it was the Texans that came out victorious after storming back for a 4-3 win over the Mountaineers.
After the Mountaineers clinched the doubles point and two of the first three singles matches, the Texans picked up three consecutive singles victories to complete the comeback. This was the first victory over App State, a 2025 UTR NIT Championship team, in program history.
The win allowed the Texans to remain undefeated at home in 2025-26 and extended their win streak in Stephenville to 17 matches. Tarleton State has not lost a home match since the 2023-24 season.
A trio of Tarleton State seniors led the Texans to victory, with Adeliya Mukhutdinova, Emma Persson and Ximena Morales all picking up singles wins. Freshman Dariia Medviedieva also played a key role in Tarleton State's team win, earning her third singles win of the season on Court 6.
"It was a roller coaster match with a lot of change in momentum, but we handled ourselves really well especially after doubles play," head coach
Elianne Douglas-Miron said. "We regrouped, we refocused and I'm really proud of the effort today. App State is a really tough team and a really well-coached team."
After App State won the doubles point, the Texans were quick to respond. Mukhutdinova's 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles over Sreenidhi Balaji tied the team score. App State, however, answered with two straight singles wins to go up 3-1 in the match.
The Mountaineers looked to be on their way to victory after taking the first set on Court 2 (6-0) and Court 6 (6-1). Tarleton State had other plans on its agenda.
Persson quickly bounced back at No. 2 singles, only dropping a combined three games to obtain a three-set victory. Medviedieva fired back on Court 6 with her first bagel of the season to force a third set. The Ukrainian freshman would not be denied, answering the bell in set three and defeating Alexi Cleveland to tie the match 3-3.
Morales won her 13th straight singles set on Court 4, but Taya Powell responded by taking the third set. The Guatemala City, Guatemala, native took charge in the third set, winning six of the final seven games to pick up her seventh singles win of the season and complete Tarleton State's come-from-behind win.
Tarleton State starts a five-match road trip on Sunday, going to San Antonio first to take on UTSA at 2 p.m.
