Tarleton State Women’s Basketball’s valiant effort against CBU comes up short

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Women's Basketball gave the top team in the WAC all they could handle, but California Baptist came out of Saturday's on top with a 76-67 at the EECU Center.

CBU's win gives the Lancers a one game lead in the WAC standings entering the final week of regular season play. Tarleton State will be the No. 4 or No. 5 seed in the WAC Tournament, with its first game being played on Thursday, March 12 at 2 p.m. CT in Las Vegas.

Senior guard Jakoriah Long led Tarleton State's scoring with 17 points on her senior day. Junior guard Caroline Lyles added 14 points while freshman center Elodie Lutbert and senior guard Gia Adams scored 11 points each. Lutbert also added 11 rebounds to give the freshman center her eighth double-double of the season.

"I thought we played really hard and I have no problem with our effort today," head coach Bill Brock said. "CBU did a good job of capitalizing off our turnovers and they are good perimeter shooters. I keep telling our team that we can beat anybody in our league and we are going into the conference tournament with that mindset."

Trading buckets to open the first quarter, CBU went out in front early with a go-ahead layup. Scoring from Lutbert and Long kept the Texans within striking distance against the leaders of the WAC standings, with a basket while drawing the foul from the senior guard making it a two-point game. After a layup from CBU, Lutbert answered with one of her own with just over a minute left in the quarter.

The Texans tied the game thanks to a steal from Lutbert that led to a layup from Long in the closing seconds. CBU, however, knocked down a buzzer beater to take a two-point lead going into the second quarter.

Forcing the Texans to miss their first eight 3-pointers and holding Tarleton State to three and a half minutes without a field goal, CBU stayed out in front. Junior forward Shadasia Brackens tied it up again, converting a steal into a basket. Adams followed suit by attacking the basket for the tying bucket after CBU's go-ahead field goal.

CBU followed with five unanswered points before a jumper from Long once again made it a two-possession game with just over two minutes to play in the half. The Lancers forced the Texans to miss eight of their last nine shots to go into the locker room with a 30-25 lead.

Lutbert's layup coming out of the second half made it a one-possession game, with a 3-pointer from Lyles making it a one-point game. CBU answered with a layup before a 3-pointer from senior guard Kyriana Jones tied the game at 41. The Lancers once again took control by going on a 7-0 scoring run.

A second chance layup from Long allowed the Texans to chip the deficit to four points with 27 seconds remaining in the third quarter. CBU once again converted on its final shot of the period, making a layup just before the buzzer to take a 51-45 lead going into the final frame.

The Lancers continued to strike on offense in the fourth quarter, scoring the first two baskets to go up by 10 and force a Tarleton State timeout. Jumpers from Lyles and Adams cut the deficit in half, with three free throws from Lyles making it a four-point game. Lyles continued to answer when called upon, getting an offensive rebound and turning it into a basket while being fouled to make it a 56-54 game.

CBU quickly responded with a basket and the foul of its own on the next possession, banking in a 3-pointer and hitting a layup shortly after to extend its lead to eight points. Lyles kept the comeback alive with another basket while drawing the foul in the last minute of play, but CBU made seven of their final nine free throws to close the game.

Tarleton State will play its final regular season game of 2025-26 on Thursday, making a short trip to Arlington to face UT Arlington at 6:30 p.m.
