Tarleton State Women’s Basketball’s second half comeback comes up short against CBU

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Down by 12 points at halftime, Tarleton State Women's Basketball was unable to hold on to its fourth quarter lead and was defeated by California Baptist 77-67 on Thursday night at the EECU Center.

The Texans went up by two points with five minutes left in the game before CBU went on a 12-0 scoring run to go back up by double digits. CBU, the leader in the WAC standings, handed the Texans their first home loss since Nov. 16, 2025.

Senior guard Jakoriah Long knocked down all four of her 3-point attempts en route to 16 points. Freshman Elodie Lutbert posted her sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds while senior guard Gia Adams added 12 points. Junior guard Caroline Lyles, whose mother passed away from breast cancer in 2019, posted a career-high 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals in her first collegiate Play4Kay game.

"Our team not protecting and taking care of the ball down the stretch was big," head coach Bill Brock said. "I don't like that we got outrebounded today. We didn't shoot the ball great, but we didn't shoot the ball bad either. We're playing the top three teams in the league this week and we have a short turnaround for Saturday. We need to try to win one of these games this week."

Fired up to be in the starting five in her first collegiate Play4Kay game, Lyles helped the Texans get out in front early. The Argyle, Texas, native converted back-to-back layups after a Long 3-pointer to put the Texans in front by one.

CBU, however, weathered the Texans' storm by going on a 9-0 scoring run in the next two minutes of the opening period. Tarleton State answered with a 3-pointer before Long knocked down a fadeaway trey prior to the shot clock buzzer going off. The Lancers responded with a 3-pointer while Long got a reverse layup to cut the deficit 21-17.

Adams' layup in the second quarter cut the deficit to one point, but CBU scored six straight points to stretch the lead. CBU forced the Texans to go scoreless in the last three and a half minutes of the second period, stretching the lead to double-digits. The Lancers ended the first half on a 7-0 scoring run to go up by 12.

A pair of baskets from Lyles to open the third quarter allowed the Texans to trim the deficit to single digits. Long followed with a 3-pointer before CBU answered with a triple of its own after the media timeout. Another 3-pointer from CBU put the Lancers ahead by eight, with Long answering the bell with a basket from beyond the arc to make it a five-point game entering the fourth quarter.

Two Tarleton State baskets to open the fourth quarter made it a one-point game, with Lutbert's jumper with 6:35 to play tying the game. Adams drove to the lane and converted a layup on the Texans' next offensive possession, giving the Texans their first lead since the opening period. After CBU responded with the tying basket, Lutbert hit a jumper to swing the advantage once again.

CBU's defense forced the Texans into cold shooting over a three-minute stretch in the fourth quarter. The Lancers took advantage by going on a 12-0 scoring run to make it a 10-point game with 37 seconds left. The Texans missed seven of their last eight shots, allowing the No. 1 team in the WAC standings to get the road win.

Tarleton State returns to the EECU Center for a Saturday afternoon contest against Southern Utah at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by visiting TarletonSports.com/Tickets or by visiting the EECU Center Box Office.
