BEAUMONT, TX — The Texans battled back to force extra innings but ultimately fell 5-3 in a walk-off loss to Lamar on Tuesday night.
Lamar struck first with a sacrifice fly in the third inning before adding runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 3-0 lead. The Texans broke through in the sixth inning, stringing together three hits to cut into the deficit. Rayner Heinrich delivered an RBI double down the left field line to score Matt Guthmiller, and Ike Shirey followed with an RBI single to bring Tarleton State within one at 3-2.
Tarleton State tied the game in the eighth inning after Jake Tatom drew a bases-loaded walk to score Heinrich and even the contest at 3-3, sending the game into extra innings.
The Texans' pitching staff combined to keep Lamar in check for much of the night. Matthew McCullough got the start, while Andrew Hardin, Conner Doucet, Ethan Jaques, and Ben Bosse each provided solid relief outings to keep the game within reach. Tai Phetluangsy (1-1) was charged with the loss after Lamar delivered a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning.
The Texans will return home this weekend to take on Air Force Friday night at 6 p.m. in Stephenville, Tx.
