STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State (18-8) rallied in extra innings to secure a 7-6 victory over Air Force (10-14) on Saturday night at the Tarleton State Baseball Complex.
After breaking through in the third inning, the Texans capitalized on defensive miscues to take an early lead. Ike Shirey reached on an error and advanced into scoring position before Rayner Heinrich delivered an RBI single through the right side to give Tarleton State a 1-0 advantage.
Tarleton State extended its lead in the fourth inning, taking advantage of another defensive miscue. After two runners reached base, Sergio Guerra highlighted the frame with a three-run home run to left field, pushing the Texans ahead 4-0.
Air Force responded in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to even the score at 4-4. The Texans answered in the seventh, as Raphael Smeenk led off the inning with a double down the right-field line before Shirey delivered an RBI single up the middle to put Tarleton State back in front. Later in the inning, Slade McCloud followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-4.
The Falcons mounted a late rally in the ninth inning, scoring two runs to tie the game and force extra innings. Both teams were held scoreless in the 10th inning before Tarleton State delivered in the 11th. Kendyl Johnson worked a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position with a stolen base before Slade McCloud delivered the game-winning RBI double down the left-field line to secure the victory. McCloud finished the night 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and a run scored, sparking key rallies for the Texans.
Tai Phetluangsy earned the win for Tarleton State, improving to 2-1 on the season after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings in relief while striking out four. Starter Ethan Wendel worked 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on three hits while striking out four. Ethan Jaques also contributed a key relief appearance, tossing 3.2 innings while allowing two runs and striking out four to help keep the Texans within striking distance.
