Texans fall to Lancers in series opener at home

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — California Baptist (31-7, 5-2 WAC) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating Tarleton State (23-14, 3-4 WAC) 12–1 on Friday.

The Lancers plated four runs in the opening inning behind five hits, highlighted by a two-run home run from Cole Hansen and an RBI single from Chris Ramirez to take control early.

Tarleton State responded in the bottom of the first when Kendyl Johnson launched a solo home run to right field, putting the Texans on the board. The offense threatened again later in the inning as Slade McCloud tripled to center field, but California Baptist was able to limit the damage and maintain the lead.

The Lancers extended their advantage in the second inning, scoring five runs on three home runs to push the margin to 9–1. California Baptist added three more runs in the fourth inning, including a three-run homer from Connor Ross, to round out the scoring. From there, the Texans' pitching staff settled in and held the Lancers scoreless over the final three innings, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

Ashton Bassett (1-3) took the loss for Tarleton State, allowing nine runs on nine hits over 2.0 innings of work. Jack Lovin followed with 2.2 innings in relief, surrendering three runs, while Carter Coffin and Corbin Walter combined for 2.1 scoreless innings to close out the game.

California Baptist's Michael Malki earned the win, tossing a complete-game effort with 12 strikeouts while allowing just one run on six hits.

The Texans will return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. to continue the series against California Baptist.
