OREM, Utah – Tarleton State Softball closed out a perfect weekend in WAC play with a 7-2 win over Utah Valley on Saturday at Wolverine Softball Field, completing the three-game road sweep.
The Texans improved to 31-17 overall and 9-3 in conference play, and have now won seven straight games, their longest winning streak since opening the year with nine straight victories. Tarleton State dropped Utah Valley to 25-19 overall and 6-9 in WAC play.
After three scoreless frames, Tarleton State broke through in the fourth.
Macie Vickers sparked the inning with a double before
Madison Runyan delivered an RBI single to left, scoring Vickers and giving the Texans a 1-0 lead.
The Texans added to their advantage in the fifth when
Casey Schultz launched a solo home run to left field, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Purple and White manufactured another run in the sixth. After reaching base on a bunt, Runyan advanced and came around to score on a Utah Valley throwing error following a double steal attempt, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Utah Valley responded in the bottom half with a solo home run, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
The Texans broke the game open in the final inning.
Jaelynn Duke led off with a single, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and later scored on Runyan's RBI single up the middle to make it 4-1.
Later in the inning,
Scarlett Poore delivered the decisive blow with a three-RBI double down the left field line, scoring
Hayden Fox, Runyan, and
Addison Wittram to extend the lead to 7-1.
Utah Valley added one run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single, but the Texans closed out the 7-2 victory.
Tarleton State recorded 10 hits in the win with no errors compared to Utah Valley's nine hits and four errors.
Runyan led the Texans with a perfect 4-for-4 performance, scoring two runs and driving in two more, while Poore provided the biggest swing of the day with a three-RBI double in a pinch-hit appearance during the seventh inning.
In the circle,
Shelby Schultz (14-4) earned the complete-game victory, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out seven. The Texans have won eight straight games with Schultz taking the circle, and she's allowed just seven runs (six earned) over her last seven appearances combining for 41 innings.
The Texans will travel to Denton, Texas, next to take on North Texas at Lovelace Stadium in another midweek game. First pitch is set for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
