Texans rally late but fall at UT Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas — Tarleton State (21-9, 1-1 WAC) battled back with a late rally, but ultimately fell to UT Arlington (12-17, 1-1 WAC), 6–3, on Friday in Arlington, Texas.

The Texans and Mavericks traded zeros through the first three innings as both pitching staffs settled in early. Cort Lowry kept UT Arlington off the board through the opening frames, retiring six of the first seven batters he faced.

UT Arlington broke through in the fourth inning, plating the game's first run on an RBI groundout to take a 1–0 lead. Tarleton State responded in the fifth when Brady Englett delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring Kendyl Johnson to tie the game at 1–1.

The Mavericks regained momentum in the bottom half of the fifth, stringing together timely situational hitting to score two runs and move ahead 3–1. UT Arlington added two more in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 5–1.

Tarleton State mounted its strongest push in the eighth inning. After Ike Shirey moved into scoring position, Sergio Guerra lined an RBI single through the infield to cut the deficit to 5–2. Moments later, a wild pitch allowed another run to score, bringing the Texans within two at 5–3 and keeping the pressure on.

UT Arlington answered in the bottom of the eighth with an unearned run to push the margin back to three. Tarleton State put a runner on in the ninth but was unable to complete the comeback.

Lowry (1–3) took the loss after working 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on two hits while striking out three. UT Arlington's Kyle Winkler earned the win, and Hayes Melville recorded the save.
