La Tech snaps Tarleton State Tennis’ win streak

RUSTON, La. – LA Tech secured the last two singles points needed to defeat Tarleton State Tennis 4-2 on Friday at the LA Tech Tennis Center.

The Texans had a 2-1 lead after freshman Aya Ishii picked up her 16th singles win of the season on Court 2. The Bulldogs, however, scored three straight points off three consecutive singles wins to get the team victory.

Ishii's win makes her the third Tarleton State freshman in the Division I era to have at least 16 wins in a season. Her next singles win will give her the most singles wins by a freshman in the program's Division I era. The freshman from Japan also picked up her sixth bagel of the season, winning the second set 6-0 over Nina Skoric to get the straight sets victory.

For the ninth straight time, the Texans captured the doubles point to go out in front. After Louisiana Tech's doubles win on Court 1, sophomores Maria Castano and Duru Kuscu set up a winner-take-all match thanks to a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles. Seniors Ximena Morales and Emma Persson got the job done for the Texans, defeating La Tech's Alice Brook and Maria Tsironi 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to put the Texans on top.

The Bulldogs, who picked up their 14th win of the season on Friday, tied the match by securing No. 1 singles. Ishii's win allowed the Texans to retake the lead, but victories at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles allowed La Tech to take the match. The match at No. 3 singles between Persson and La Tech's Diana Starodubtseva went unfinished going into the third set.

Tarleton State returns home for its final two matches of the season, taking on North Texas (Friday at 1 p.m.) and Abilene Christian (Saturday at 1 p.m.) at the Tarleton State Tennis Facility. Friday is Military Appreciation and Residential Life Day, where Corps of Cadets will grill food for fans. Saturday is Senior Day and the Alumni Match, which includes street tacos and a water bottle giveaway. Admission to all home matches at the Tarleton State Tennis Facility is free.
