STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State (21-11) fell to UTSA (23-10), 6–2, on Tuesday night at home after the Roadrunners used a big first inning to lead wire-to-wire.
UTSA struck quickly in the opening frame, launching back-to-back two-run home runs to take a 4–0 advantage before the Texans had a chance to settle in. The Roadrunners added another run in the second on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5–0.
UTSA pushed its lead to six in the third inning, capitalizing on a bases-loaded situation with an RBI fielder's choice to make it 6–0.
Tarleton State responded in the bottom half of the third inning when Rayner Heinrich delivered an RBI double to left field, scoring Kendyl Johnson to put the Texans on the board. The Texans continued to chip away in the fourth inning as Cage McCloud lined an RBI double down the right field line to score Ike Shirey, cutting the deficit to 6–2.
The Tarleton State bullpen settled in after the early innings, combining to hold UTSA scoreless over the final six frames. Karsen Davis, Andrew Hardin, Jackson Elizondo, and Brendon Carter provided steady relief work to keep the Texans within striking distance.
Ashton Bassett (1–2) took the loss for Tarleton State, while UTSA's James Hubbard (1–1) earned the win.
The Texans will return to conference play as they take on ACU this weekend. With impending inclement weather, the series schedule may change. Stay tuned for updates.
