STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State Men's Basketball head coach Eric Haut announced the addition of Virginia Tech transfer Brett Freeman to the 2026-27 roster on Thursday evening.
 
Freeman will become the 15^th player rostered by the Texans and the 11^th newcomer to the 2026-27 roster. The 6-5 guard will make his collegiate debut on the court for the Texans, one of just two players on the current roster who hasn't played in a collegiate game yet, joining freshman Caeden Hutcherson. Freeman is one of the 10 transfer portal additions for Haut and his staff ahead of their first season in Stephenville.
 
"Brett Freeman is a 6'5" guard who brings tremendous versatility to our team," said Haut. "He has the ability to handle the ball, create for others, and score at all three levels. Brett can break defenders down off the dribble, make plays for his teammates, and is a very capable shooter both off the catch and off the dribble."
 
Originally hailing from the Bronx, NY, Freeman played his prep ball at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, NC. As a senior, Freeman had his best prep year averaging 24.2 points and earning a spot as a finalist for the North Carolina Mr. Basketball award. He was named First Team All-Conference, Conference Player of the Year and was a First Team All-Region selection. He set the school record for points in a season, scoring 604 points as a senior. The standout scored a career-high 49 points in a game, also a school record. After entering the recruiting spotlight as a senior with multiple Power Four offers, he committed to Virginia Tech last May where he spent his first collegiate season. Freeman redshirted for the 2025-26 slate with the Hokies.
 
"Coming from Virginia Tech, where he redshirted this past season, Brett had the opportunity to play for a great coach in Mike Young and develop within a high-level program while preparing for this next step," continued Haut. "We are excited about the opportunity to add a player of Brett's caliber to our roster and can't wait to get to work!"
 
Freeman will join his new teammates as they continue their final few weeks of summer workouts.
