Tarleton State Volleyball falls in tough battle at Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – Tarleton State Volleyball held its own early against Arizona, but the Wildcats came out on top 3-0 (17-25, 23-25, 22-25) on Saturday afternoon at the McKale Center on day two of the Wildcat Classic. 

Arizona, who received votes in the top 25 AVCA preseason poll, held Tarleton State to a .164 attacking percentage. The Texans led the kills' category on Saturday 41-37 in the team's first match against a Power 4 opponent since 2023. 

Freshman middle blocker Onita Davis led with a game-high 15 kills to go with a . 538 attacking percentage. Davis' 15 kills were the most by a Tarleton State freshman against a Power 4 opponent. Setters Alexis Massey (18) and Kingsley Minus (17) each produced double-digit assists while libero Leddy Rae Guinn came up with 13 digs. 

A kill from Davis early in the first set allowed the Texans to tie the score, but Arizona answered with four consecutive points to stretch the lead. Tarleton State countered the Wildcats' attack with three straight points to make it a one-point set. Arizona fired right back by getting three kills, a service ace and forcing a Tarleton State attacking error to take an eight-point lead. 

Two kills from Davis and a kill from outside hitter/opposite Madison Rice-Locket kept the Texans' alive. The Wildcats produced two kills and forced the Texans into an attacking error to take the first set. 

Tarleton State opened the second set with four straight points to take an early lead over the Wildcats, but Arizona rallied three of the next four points to swing the advantage. Kills by Rice-Locket, Davis and middle blocker/outside hitter Madison Frank put the Texans in front 11-8. After two kills by the Texans to go up once again, two points by Arizona tied it at 19 all. 

Davis came up with another kill to give the Texans a one-point lead late in the second set, but Arizona responded with a kill of its own and forced Tarleton State into an attacking error. Arizona scored four of the final five points of the set to clinch the set and take a 2-0 lead. 

Arizona opened the third set on a 5-0 scoring run, but Tarleton State answered back with five straight points of its own to retake the lead. The Wildcats, however, used a 6-0 scoring run in the third set to take an 11-6 lead. A pair of kills and a service ace ignited another 5-0 scoring run from the Texans, resulting in a 15-14 lead for the Purple and White. 

A kill from opposite Breannah Peterson and a service ace from Massey gave the Texans a two-point lead, but Arizona responded with five straight points to take control. Arizona capped off the match by scoring three of the final four points to complete the sweep.
