Islanders defeat Tarleton State Volleyball to end home invitational

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Volleyball (3-6, 0-0) was defeated by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (2-5, 0-0) in the final match of the Tarleton State Invitational 3-0 (22-25, 18-25, 21-25) on Saturday at Wisdom Gym. 

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tallied 48 kills and accumulated an attacking percentage of .343 in the win. Tarleton State was held to 39 kills and a .253 attacking percentage. 

Fifth year outside hitter LaNeah Lara and junior libero Leddy Rae Guinn were both named to the Tarleton State Invitational All-Tournament Team. Lara led the Texans with 11 kills and had a .292 attacking percentage in Saturday's match. Guinn co-led the team in digs with 12, with freshman setter Kingsley Minus also collecting 12 digs. Senior setter Alexis Massey added 18 assists in the match. 

Tarleton State took an early lead off kills from Lara and Peterson, with the duo capitalizing again to push the Texans out in front 8-4. After Tarleton State scored three straight points later in the opening set, the Islanders used a 6-0 scoring run to take a two-point lead. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used a service ace to go up 21-18, but a kill from Frank helped the Texans chip away at the deficit. 

A kill from Peterson kept the Texans alive in the first set on the Islanders' match point. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, however, got the match point needed to win set one 25-23. 

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used a 4-0 scoring run to take the lead early in the second set. Tarleton State countered moments later, using four straight points to chip away at the deficit. A kill from Frank made it a two-point set, but the Islanders ended the second set on a 5-0 scoring run to go up 2-0 in the match. The Islanders finished the set with a .469 attacking percentage while holding Tarleton State to just a .194 attacking percentage. 

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Erin Hermann came up with two kills and assisted on another to help the Islanders go out in front in the third set. A service ace put the Islanders back up by two points before Tarleton State tied it up and used a 3-0 scoring run to move ahead 11-9. The Islanders answered with a 4-0 scoring run and back-to-back kills later in the set to take a five-point lead. 

The Islanders finished the third set with a .355 attacking percentage to take the sweep and hand Tarleton State its first home loss of 2026. 

Tarleton State goes back on the road for a four-match road swing to end non-conference play. The Texans will travel to Lubbock on Tuesday to face Texas Tech before heading to Denton for the UNT Invitational.
