Texas Tech completes comeback, defeats Tarleton State Volleyball

LUBBOCK, Texas – Tarleton State Volleyball dominated the first set in Tuesday night's matchup, igniting a Texas Tech comeback that gave the Red Raiders a 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 20-25, 13-25) win at United Supermarkets Arena.

The Texans (3-7, 0-0) came out swinging with a .308 hitting percentage while holding Texas Tech (7-2, 0-0) to just .034 hitting in the first set. Texas Tech, however, ended with a .522 hitting and did not commit an attack error in the fourth set to take the match following victories in sets two and three.

Tuesday marked the head coaching debut at Texas Tech for interim coach Alisa Blair. She was named the Texas Tech interim head coach on Sunday.

Freshman middle blocker Onita Davis led with a team-high 13 kills and hit .407 in the match. Davis is the second player in the Division I era to obtain multiple 10+ kill matches against Power 4 Conference opponents (Lauren Kersey). Fellow freshman Jacqui McClain added 12 kills and eight digs in Tuesday's match. McClain and Davis are the first freshman duo in the program's Division I era to have 10+ kills each in a match against a Power 4 Conference opponent.

Freshman setter Kingsley Minus posted a career-high 22 assists and senior setter Alexis Massey added 19 assists. Junior libero Leddy Rae Guinn, a former Lubbock Christian standout, had 20 digs in her return to Lubbock, Texas.

Opening the first set on a 4-0 scoring run, Tarleton State capitalized off Texas Tech's early mistakes later to extend the lead. A kill from former Texas Tech player Alyssa Dinh and a service ace allowed the Texans to take an eight-point lead, with a 4-0 scoring run putting Tarleton State up by double digits. Dinh quickly helped the Texans recover after a service error, collecting a kill to put her team on top by 11.

Kills by fifth year outside hitter LaNeah Lara and senior middle blocker Madison Frank helped the Texans stay in front by 10. The Texans capped off the first set by scoring three of the final four points to clinch the opening set in dominating fashion, 25-14.

The Texans eyed an identical set, going on two different 4-0 scoring runs to take an early 14-9 lead in the second set. After a kill by Lara put the Texans up by five, Texas Tech scored four unanswered points to chip away at the deficit. A service error briefly stopped the scoring spree before the Red Raiders used a 5-0 spurt to go out on top.

Tarleton State refused to go down in the second set, responding with three straight points to tie the second set score at 20. Texas Tech answered with three straight points, getting the final two points of the set following back-to-back points from the Texans.

A kill from McClain gave the Texans an early one-point lead in the third set before Texas Tech countered with five consecutive points. Even when kills from McClain and Davis cut the deficit to one, Texas Tech never relinquished the lead in the third set. The Red Raiders ended the third set on a 3-0 scoring run to win 25-20 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Another 3-0 scoring run by the Red Raiders in the fourth set made it a nine-point set, with four consecutive points allowing Texas Tech to go up by 12. Tatum Johnson's 16th kill of the match capped off the rally for Texas Tech and gave the Red Raiders their first win in the Blair era.

Tarleton State wraps up non-conference play in Denton, Texas, competing in the UNT Invitational starting Thursday. The Texans will face North Texas, East Texas A&M and West Virginia over a three-match span.
