Tarleton State Volleyball collects Saturday sweep, defeats North Alabama 3-0

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Volleyball ended Saturday with a sweep, knocking off North Alabama 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-21) at Wisdom Gym to move to 2-0 in United Athletic Conference Play.

The Texans (6-9, 2-0) are 2-0 to start conference play for the first time since 2023. Tarleton State hit .375 in the first set and .324 in the third set to collect the win over North Alabama (11-4, 1-1).

Fifth year outside hitter LaNeah Lara led Tarleton State with 10 kills to go with a .320 hit percentage. Senior setter Alexis Massey added another double-double of 14 assists and 10 digs, becoming the first Texan since 2020 to collect back-to-back double-doubles in the first two conference matches (Kayla Brannon). Junior setter Peyton Fadal added 16 assists and eight digs in her Texan debut while junior libero Leddy Rae Guinn led the team defensively with 18 digs.

Capturing the first two points of the match, the Texans stretched its early lead to four points. North Alabama, however, scored five of the next six points to tie set one at nine. That sparked a 5-0 scoring run by the Texans, with a kill from freshman middle blocker Onita Davis and a bad set by North Alabama capping off the scoring spree.

North Alabama answered to make it a one-point set before kills from seniors Madison Frank and Breannah Peterson kept the Texans' momentum from shifting. Tarleton State ended the first set on a 5-0 scoring run to clinch the opening frame 25-18.

The Texans went on a 3-0 scoring run to start the second set, but North Alabama countered with three straight points to take an early one-point lead. An attack error allowed the Texans to tie it up before the Lions went on another 3-0 scoring run to go back out in front. The Texans followed suit, scoring five unanswered points to take a 14-12 lead in the second set.

Back-to-back kills from North Alabama's Dylann Garner allowed the Lions to take a one-point lead later in the second set, but the Texans quickly responded again. Fadal came up with a kill after an attack error by the Lions to give the Texans the one-point edge. The Texans ended the second set on a 6-0 scoring run and scored seven of the final eight points to take set two 25-19.

North Alabama took control early in the third set and went on a 4-0 scoring run to go up 15-9. Once again, the comeback kids answered the bell. Tarleton State scored six unanswered points, with Lara and Fadal combining for five of those points during that stretch.

A kill from North Alabama tied it at 16 before the Texans went on another 4-0 scoring run to maintain momentum. The Lions cut the deficit to three points, but a kill from sophomore middle blocker Alyssa Dinh secured the Saturday sweep with a 25-21 win in the third set.

Tarleton State hits the road for the first time in UAC play starting Thursday, traveling to Eastern Kentucky at 5 p.m. CT.
