Tarleton’s Richard Bartel signed a free agent deal with the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League following a two-year stint with the Texans. The Cowboys invited Bartel to mini-camps and then took the free agent to the 2007 Preseason Camp in San Antonio afterwhich he quarterbacked the practice squad. He was one of four quarterbacks on the Cowboys roster prior to the 2008 season, but Bartel went to Cleveland Browns to quarterback practice squad in November of 2008.


Bartel finished his career with a 59.4 passing percentage, which is No. 3 on the school’s all-time list.. He completed 314 of 529 passes thrown in 20 games as a Texan while throwing 128 touchdowns and for 3,906, an average of 195.3 yards per contest.

In 2006, Bartel threw for 2,023 yards while completing 161 of 276 passes with just five interceptions. He threw for 16 touchdowns and averaged 202.3 yards passing per outing. He completed 58.3 percent of his passes thrown as a senior. He had one rushing touchdown.

As a junior in 2005, Bartel completed 153 of 253 passes with 11 interceptions. He threw for 1,883 yards and 12 touchdowns while completing 60.5 percent of his passes which is third on the all-time single-season completion percentage list. He averaged 188.3 yards per game passing in his first year at Tarleton.

In 2010, the Arizona Cardinals signed Bartel.  For the 2011 season, he was listed as the back-up to former Stephenville High School quarterback Kevin Kolb.
