Texans ranked No. 10 in final AFCA poll

WACO – The Tarleton Texan football team finished the season No. 10 in the nation according to the final National Football Coaches Association poll released Monday.

The Texans finished the year 10-3 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs, falling to then-No. 1 Central Washington in Ellensburg, Wash.

Tarleton is the top-ranked Lone Star Conference school in the final poll, and the third-highest ranked team in Super Region Four behind national champion Northwest Missouri State.  CWU finished the season ranked No. 3 in the final poll.

This is the second time the Texans have finished the season ranked No. 10 in the nation.  Tarleton completed the 2001 season as No. 10 in the final poll after making it to the second round that season as well, though it was the quarterfinals in 2001 since the NCAA only took four teams from each region instead of six as it does now.

Other LSC schools in the poll are No. 13 Abilene Christian, No. 14 Midwestern State and No. 16 Texas A&M-Kingsville.  No. 25 Washburn is the only other Super Region Four team in the final poll.

The coaches poll is voted on by a panel of head coaches throughout the nation.
