STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton TexAnn volleyball team split their matches on Saturday at the Tarleton Recreation Sports Center to go 2-2 over the weekend during the 2009 TexAnn Invitational.
The TexAnns (4-9) opened Saturday's action falling in straight set to Incarnate Word. The Cardinals had 10 aces in the match, with four of them from Emily Kopecki and Mary Beth Huber. That was enough to propel the visiting squad from San Antonio that went on to win by scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-14. Edie Wise led the Cardinals with a match-high 16 kills.
Senior middle blocker Shay Gracy led the charge for the TexAnns with eight kills and two blocks. Sophomore setter Jessie Hartman ran the offense and finished the match with 20 assists.
The TexAnns then mixed up their rotation, changing the line-up from a s-2 offense into a 5-1 offense. That seemed to work well as Tarleton opened their match with Texas A&M International on a 6-1 run and never looked back.
Junior outside hitter Rachel Wolf led all TexAnn hitters with 10 kills and tallied match-high four services aces as well. Gracy finished with nine kills on a .304 attack percentage. Junior libero Shea McBrearty led the defense with 15 digs while Gracy and Junior Erin Lynn each had four block assists. Hartman finished with 30 assists that led the offense to a .185 hitting performance. The defense held strong allowing the Dustdevils to just a .088 hitting percentage throughout the match.
Gracy finished the tournament with 40 kills on a .319 attacking percentage and 12 total blocks (one block solo). Her performance earned her all-tournament honors for the second straight week.
Sharing all-tournament honors with Gracy were, senior setter Holly Hicks from East Central; senior middle blocker Edie Weise from Incarnate Word; senior setter Cheryl Coldwell from Oklahoma Panhandle State; sophomore rightside hitter Emily Walter from Southwestern Oklahoma; junior outside hitter Alexandria Montemayor from Texas A&M International; junior libero Kendra Coulson from Texas Woman's; and senior outside hitter Molly Atnip from Texas-Permian Basin.
The TexAnns will begin Lone Star Conference play next week as the team hosts Texas Woman's at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17 at Wisdom Gym.
