Texans looking for season sweep over DBU Monday

DALLAS – The Tarleton Texans will return to action on Monday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. when they visit Dallas Baptist for the Texans final non-conference game of the regular season.

The Texans are 12-2 overall after a 68-55 win at Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday where Devon Hills had a season-high 24 points for Tarleton and Corin Henry had eight rebounds for the purple and white.

Tarleton is 6-0 this season against teams not in the Lone Star Conference, including an 81-71 win over the Patriots in the season opener on Nov. 17.  In the game, the Texans were led by Henry with 21 points and Donta Smith and Jeremiah Wilson with nine rebounds apiece.

This season, the Texans are led by Henry with 12.5 points per game, 66 assists and 30 steals.  He is averaging 4.1 rebounds per game from the point guard position.  Also averaging in double figures is Hills (11.6) and Wilson (10.9).  Wilson leads the squad in rebounding with 9.3 per outing, while the senior also leads the team with 25 blocks.

Tarleton is averaging .431 from the floor this season, .374 from the three-point arc and .669 from the charity stripe while opponents are hitting .355 from the field, .315 from the arc and .635 from the line.  The Texans are outscoring opponents 70.9 to 54.6 and outrebounding them 39.4 to 33.6. 

In the six games against non-LSC foes, Tarleton is holding the opponents to just 47.8 points per game and outscoring them by 29.7 points.  The Texans are hitting 42.4 percent from the three-point arc in such games and .484 from the floor. Opponents have been hitting just 26.4 percent from the arc and .332 from the field.

In the first meeting of the season between the two teams (and the first ever in the history of the basketball programs), Tarleton forced 19 turnovers and scored 22 points off of those turnovers.  Tarleton turned the ball over just nine times. The Texans led 43-33 at the half and DBU led by one on two different occasions within the first three minutes before Tarleton took the lead for good with 16:20 remaining in the first period.

The Patriots are 8-5 overall after returning four starters from last year's squad that reached the NCAA Division II South Central Regional with a 24-7 record. After losing four of their first five, the Patriots won six straight and seven of their last eight games.  DBU is coming off a 65-61 overtime victory at home against Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday.  Jordan McGowen led the squad with 18 points and 17 rebounds.

This season, DBU is 4-2 at home and is led by Bryan Baumann with 16.5 points per game while Ty Gough (15.7), Braxton Adamson (14.5) and Jordan McGowen (13.6) are also averaging in double figures.  Gouh's 9.1 rebounds per game is tops on the squad while McGowen is second with 7.1 boards per contest.

The Patriots are shooting .476 from the field, .364 from the arc and .751 from the line while opponents are averaging .459 from the floor, .304 from the arc and .698 from the stripe.  DBU is outscoring opponents 81.2 to 79.8 and outrebounding them 37.4 to 31.3.

The game will be broadcast on KSTV 93.1 FM, joining the game at the completion of the women's game at Texas-Permian Basin.
